Mike Tomlin as new Saints HC

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I’d pass on Tomlin (if he was let go) as HC. It’s time to look for a innovative, fresh, young mind. But what I do respect about Mike is that he gets the most out of a player & doesn’t ...

But what I do respect about Mike is that he gets the most out of a player & doesn’t mind calling out poor, underachieving play .. QB included.

Dennis Allen and his crew just needs to be gone 💨.

Re: Mike Tomlin as new Saints HC

I know he had issues off the field but I might be interested in Ben Roethlisberger as some kind of assistant coach passing game coordinator if he was interested. All his years in Pittsburgh every receiver he worked with was amazing, then usually they went to another team and were suddenly pedestrian. Now Pittsburgh's receivers are ok but not world beaters. I wonder if he was part of what made the offense click not just Tomlin and a bunch of different OCs. It would be rare for a high profile QB to take such a job but Roethlisberger uniquely has the reputation damage to restore and he possibly made the players around him better more than anyone including Tom Brady, that is Antonio Brown was definitely better around him, and most of Brady's receivers had similar success with other teams/QBs such as Welker, Moss, and Evans while most of Roethlisberger's were a shadow of themselves outside Pittsburgh. Most of Drew Brees receivers struggled without Brees, but never really attained the heights with Brees that Roethlisberger's did in Pittsburgh and few really moved on while still in their prime to tell.

Cmon… DA needs 5 or 6 more years to develop into Lombardi. I’ll be wearing my Derek Carr panties and cheering on my Saints until then.

I don't know what our future drafts picks are for 2025 & 2026, but we may be able to do something similar for compensation as we did for CSP.

What are ya'lls thoughts?
If Pittsburg does decide to move on from Tomlin he'd essentially be a free agent and wouldn't cost us any draft picks. Our difference with Payton was his leaving was his idea so we were able to retain his rights.

That said, I'd be all in on Tomlin.

Oh, and welcome back!

I think we will be outbit for Tomlin's service full-stop if it were to come to it. And that's fine as I might rather have a fresher younger coaching prospect.

Tomlin will not come cheap, he still has a year left on his contract and the Steelers would likely leverage that for some draft picks.

They can't leverage anything if they let him go. When a coach is fired the team forfeits any rights. Payton quit on his own so the Saints retained his rights. I just can't see any scenario where Tomlin would willingly walk away from the Steelers job.

Coaches get let go all the time and can go anywhere they want right away. I would imagine the vast majority coaches have time left on their contracts when cut loose.
