My issue with Chase Young is trust. Imagine your daughter had a crush on a boy in college who seemed like a great catch. Now its 5 years after college and they have reconnected, except since then he had been divorced twice due to a combination of committing adultery and domestic violence. When they first reconnected she was eager to take him out anyway and they made a date for Friday night, but he inexplicably called it off at the last minute, then they reconnected the next week. Now they are engaged to marry in a year, she wants you to put down the non-refundable deposit for a big wedding venue now, and if the wedding doesn't fall through in a year she mentioned that after the wedding she wants you to take out a mortgage to help them start his business together.

Thats where I feel we are with Young. He was great in college. Since then, the 49ers and Redskins both dumped him due to a combination of low effort and injuries. $13 million for a year isn't cheap but it isn't a fortune. However if he keeps up the act for a year, he might bag a long term contract. He already suckered a team into blowing the #2 overall pick on him and then started taking plays off and coming back very slow from injury. So even if he proves a value on the $13 million deal, that just leads to an even more dangerous investment.

I just don't believe you can ever trust someone who burned their previous teams so badly and has so many risk factors. If he does great, I would offer him a raise to 1 year $16 million in 2025. If he gets 5 years $140 million elsewhere, I would let him walk and take the comp pick.

The Saints once acquired another top 3 overall pick who could not produce in Washington. His name was Heath Shuler. By all accounts he was a nice guy. He just lacked the committment and determination to be a great football player in the NFL.

If we draft Dallas Turner we almost certainly need to trade Payton Turner or Foskey. It'd be 6 DE's including Cam, Granderson and Chase.

Wow Bako, that's... elaborate. And I get where you are coming from, but would be worried more if this were anything more than a "prove it" contract.

Yeah, I'm with you Stick. He went over the river and through the woods with that analogy, but I understand the gist of it.

A one year is nothing more than a 'prove it' contract. If he balls out and stays healthy, I'm OK with it for 2024. 2025? That's another issue. Let's see what he brings. SB/Rookie Chase, or that guy that 'takes plays off'. ;)

Well, Chase had 7-1/2 sacks last year. I would be happy to get 8-10 from him in 2024. I'm pretty sure he will be a rotational DE for us.

The Saints were ranked 31st in pass rush efficiency for 2023.

Chase will help.

I’d still target a DE in the draft though (1st or 2nd).

As Triplett and Underhill said, 7.5 sacks is what Granderson had last year, too. If we get another Granderson out of Young it'll be a good deal. But, who knows, hopefully Cam will be healthy coming off that ankle he struggled with all season last year and Granderson keeps developing and we have premier pass rush again. And I'm not counting Foskey or Kpassagnon out of the mix either. And that's not even counting Turner if he was able to stay healthy.

Please refrain from personal insults. Feel free to post either your own opinions or fact based critiques of other peoples opinions, but leave out the 'haha thats so stupid because I said so' posts. Logically, I have every right to feel that a chronically underachieving phenom with injury and effort issues is a risky bet. If he balls out as some say, we are in the same predicament that Tampa Bay was in with Mayfield's new contact, where a contract year performance from a known unreliable commodity could paint us into a corner on feeling forced to give him a big contract we know is too risky. If it was just the injury, it could be a situation like when we signed Brees. If it was just the lack of production, maybe he never found the right fit for a team. But when you throw in the problems with effort too, its so easy to see a scenario here where its lose-lose. Either we flush $13 million down the toilet, or we think we hit the jackpot in 2024 and we flush $100 million down the toilet for 2025-2028 and he goes back to half assing it and taking 2 years to recover from injuries. If we were going to spend the money at DE, I would have preferred a different player.
