Re: Saints sign Chase Young
The per game roster bonuses are good mechanism IF they stay in place. The thing is, addictions are hard to break, and roster bonuses make excellent candidates for restructuring, which is a certain junkies drug of choice. The legitimate fear I have is that a certain PR genius knows he can double dip on getting credit for engineering these roster bonuses as injury protection, then once the story fades, restructuring to prove cap wizard acumen creating cap space to make some other ill advised move happen. If the junkie needs a fix, I would not be surprised at all to read in May that the Saints have restructured Chase Young's contract to free up $7.5 million in cap space. This would involve converting his $2.7 million base salary to $1.2 million bonus and converting his weekly roster bonuses to a lump some restructure bonus, both prorated over 5 years. Worse still, this could be spun further to lump the restructure into an extension just a few weeks in the season, based on very small sample size of effort and durability, just like Granderson and Ruiz were extended in the first 3 weeks of the season last year. Similarly last year the Saints expected that Alvin Kamara would face a suspension, but still restructured his base salary into a bonus, effectively guaranteeing the vast majority of his pay for the affected games, and giving away financial protection in return for short term cap relief and long term debt. I hope the injury protections are real, but considering that last year the Saints did not leave any stone unturned on restructuring including a player they knew would be suspended and were down to about $3 million that could have possibly been freed up, I think I have a right to doubt whether they will leave $8 million unturned for the whole year and truly protect us from another injury with this player.
