Logically, I have every right to feel that a chronically underachieving phenom with injury and effort issues is a risky bet. If he balls out as some say, we are in the same predicament that Tampa Bay was in with Mayfield's new contact, where a contract year performance from a known unreliable commodity could paint us into a corner on feeling forced to give him a big contract we know is too risky. If it was just the injury, it could be a situation like when we signed Brees. If it was just the lack of production, maybe he never found the right fit for a team. But when you throw in the problems with effort too, its so easy to see a scenario here where its lose-lose. Either we flush $13 million down the toilet, or we think we hit the jackpot in 2024 and we flush $100 million down the toilet for 2025-2028 and he goes back to half assing it and taking 2 years to recover from injuries. If we were going to spend the money at DE, I would have preferred a different player.

Not a personal insult, dude. Just an opinion on your content. You, however, know about personal insults having called my mother a whore on more than one occasion.

What excites me the most is that he is only 24. He still should have 2--4 years of development before him. Best case scenario he turns into the player the Commanders hope they drafted and produces a 10+ sack season before signing a longer contract with us and becoming a starter for 5+ years.

I hope he absolutely explodes this year but at the same time, I'm scared of the type of contract he'll command and how he performs once he gets it(if we're the one giving it to him).

Let's just hope for a great season first.

Bingo! That's my biggest fear too. He could ball out next year and sign a lucrative contract and then get lazy again.

Hopefully he performs well enough to net a 3rd round comp pick when he moves on

Woof!

Reassessing the 49ers' Trade for Chase Young

Quote:

The 49ers thought Young would play hard for them because they were a Super Bowl contender. Wrong. They also thought Young would play hard because he was reuniting with Nick Bosa, his college teammate. Wrong. As Washington already knew, nothing could motivate Young to play hard. Even in the NFC Championship Game, he jogged around the field during touchdown runs. The Commanders must have laughed.
This offseason, the 49ers didn't even offer Young a contract -- they were done with him. And so he signed with the New Orleans Saints, who are going nowhere. A perfect spot for him.

as long as he doesn't show up to training camp wearing a Halo and Depends, I'm good with it. Still some mild concerns, but a flyer on a 1 year deal for this cat, what the hell. Some good upside.
