Derek Carr

Guys I have been kinda out of the mix for the last month. Was wondering what the situation with Carr is. I know his contract was restructured but I haven’t heard nor seen this guy make any comment since Moore was hired. Is some of the speculation true that he could still be moved prior to draft or season? Are reports of a trade for Milton accurate? What is our best option at QB in the draft? I’ve seen some analysts claim that the Saints are looking at Ewers which is a nightmare if you ask me. Guy has nothing more than an accurate short route pass. Can’t go deep and has nothing emotion on the field. I would pass. Just wanted to know if you guys had any insight into anything

Re: Derek Carr

Carr did speak with Moore back in late February and things were good. The Saints FO also told Carr they wanted him to stay.
There's another report a week or so later that Moore took the job with idea Carr would be starting.
There is also some other article that the Saints restructured Carr without his permission.
If that latter is true, then there could be something brewing on that front, but it doesn't jive with Cooks complimenting Carr and talking to him.
As for Ewers, I'm not that against him. If he can do the intermediate routes that's just as important. He can't be worse than the other backups we have. He's grown as a passer over the years. It's also speculated he fits Moore's system. Despite the naysayers, Carr is still sharp and keeps himself active so unless he wants out or is unhappy, he's the starting QB for the next two years.

Carr's restructure was simply a conversion of base salary to signing bonus paid now and accounted for mostly later. Virtually all contracts these days have the stipulation that the club can do this without any subsequent "permission" required from the player. It actually works out to the advantage of the player. They get the same money up front.

Nothing brewing on the restructure front. All contract restructuring doesn't require permission of the player. All it does is convert guaranteed salary for the season into a bonus that is payed to the player now. It let's the team spread that money into further cap years into the future, lowing the cap hit for this year. Standard Saints practice that drives people crazy because it ties the player to the team longer. It's the "kicking the can" that so infuriates so many fans.

The Saints build that flexibility into all their bigger contracts.

BTW welcome back.

Super Bowl Championships: New Orleans Saints:1, Carolina:0, Atlanta Chokers: STILL ZERO

Only Atlanta choked in an unchokable situation... Life is definitely good.

Saints' Derek Carr sought a trade early in 2025 offseason, New Orleans eyeing QB successor, per reports
The New Orleans Saints restructured Derek Carr's contract this offseason, all but ensuring the quarterback will remain with the team through the 2025 season. That doesn't mean all is well between the two sides. Carr sought a trade before reworking his deal, according to NewOrleans.Football, and his relationship with the Saints remains "tenuous at best" as the club scouts potential quarterbacks of the future.
We have no idea what's going on behind closed doors at the Saints facility but the fans don't like Carr and Carr doesn't appear to like the New Orleans Saints.

I am a fan and I have no issue with Carr. And surmising that Carr doesn't like the Saints is a stretch.

He was deteriorated on the Raiders bench. We paid big bucks to inherit the stench.

It’s possible Carr was in the same boat I was in about 1.5 years ago when I knew how restructures worked but didnt know they could be executed without the players consent and were built into the contract. At the time I feared Carr could extract a raise or additional guarantees from the Saints in return for signing on the dotted line to a restructure if the Saints got so cap broke or unwilling to rebuild that they had to restructure him no matter the cost. Everyone assumes that if Carr was upset the Saints could restructure without his signature that means he wanted to leave the team, but its equally possible he wanted a raise to $50-60mil/yr and a guaranteed money in 2027.
