Payton can see what we see!!
Sorry if this was posted somewhere else but:
Payton is cutting loose all of those player that we think underachieve and arent worth their contract. First and foremost is the gentlemen who shall not be named, then its gandy who has been dragging down the line as well as the above mentioned (not an excuse by the way, just a symptom) Jacox is gone - someone once said at the end of a busted play or big play for the opposing team there is a guy standing with this hands on his hips - he was talking about jacox hodge is gone We have resigned a DT, signed another DT, signed a LB, as well as acquiring at least two DBs so far, i mean this is amazing. we have need help and fresh flesh in these positions for years and now the time is come. Personally, i want the team to succed as much as anyone else on this board and beyond but hey, at least we are recognizing the problems with our own guys. If we suck, lets suck with guys we didnt know would suck right? Another thing, there has been ample talk about the decline of our special teams and i think this is due to Randy Mueller's departure. This is not a post clamoring for his return or that he is genius, but one thing you could count on with Randy is that he would draft solidly on the second day and pick up UDFA who could play on special teams. The thing that Loomis or the former Heckuva Ballcoach couldnt seem to grasp that. i think our special teams are lacking talent because our backups are throwaways and not guys who can step in EVER. questions? comments? snide remarks? |

First of all, good point about the special teams. ST used to be one of our strengths, and now we're falling victim to missed tackles, holding calls on virtually ever punt/kickoff return, etc. Not to mention Carney misses some of the biggest momentum-killing kicks ever. Overall, this should be an area of concern.
Also, we have signed 2 LBs so far. Fujita, who is a solid player, and Simmons, who if he can stay healthy, can be one of the best in the league. Overall, I am happy with the progress Payton has made. He's addressed serious issues in this team, especially with our old signal-caller and perhaps more importantly, the coaching staff. He's signed some good players who might not be the sexiest names, but certainly are good players (Bennett, Fujita, Woodard, Simmons). I think that he has come in here with a plan, and although we can only see some moves that leave us wondering, I believe that in the end, we can look back and see these moves fitting into the larger picture. |

I think it is important that every step we have taken so far has been in the right the direction. Perhaps they arent the biggest steps, but they are going forward.
We keep talking about Brick, Hawk, Leinart, Williams and Cutler, but i think regardless of who we take, the staff so far has shown enough for me to think we will address needs in the draft. Meaning, if we take Brick, im sure well get a LB later as well as CB and certainly QB. or if its Hawk, its OT, OG and so forth in every round after. Of course we still are the saints and we have half the brain trust that brought us the last few years, so keep poking those voodoo dolls and salting the earth. |

I agree. This dude seems to know what he wants.
I especially love that Gandy is in Atl. I'm sure wayne was a good dude...but I hated seeing that facemask up on his forehead after every holding call. Good post. But...try not to be so positive next time. |

The interesting news will be to see what happens after the minicamps. Maybe Payton will decide he can't win with a few more guys? The one thing I'm seeing from Payton which is the most encouraging is that he doesn't appear to be a a victim of his own ego. One of Haslett's big downfalls may have been a limitless belief that he could "coach up" players into quality starters. Payton seems to be looking for guys who can already play. All that said, I'm still not sure what I think about the Gandy deal. He was expensive, but given the outlook on our offensive line, it might have been nice to move him inside and have veteran guards at any rate. |
