i gotta believe there is a trade in the works for smith. gleason is gone. scott could be cut as well. that trade was more about dumping a fat contract than anything else.

LordOfEntropy 04-30-2006 09:50 AM

Agreed on Smith. Agreed on Gleason. Unknown on Scott. But I also think Bellamy will be cut. So five safeties is my guess for the season.

papz 04-30-2006 09:53 AM

The thing is... didn't Kiper said he wasn't that good of a hitter but then again... it is Kiper. He's on the team now so whether I liked the pick anymore doesn't really matter. He's a Saint and I hope he pans out.

BlackandBlue 04-30-2006 09:55 AM

i will say this about bellamy. i was never fond of this guy as a long term solution at ss. there were times he would miss a tackle that would have my jaw hit the floor. but he is a resilient little ****er, and has fought to stay on this roster, and start, when healthy....i've kinda changed my tune on him.

that being said, he'll probably be cut on monday and sign with the rams on tuesday. ;)

BlackandBlue 04-30-2006 09:57 AM

i have a scratch pad where i write various notes during college games. under the senior bowl, i have written, verbatim, "harper- big pop- stood rb up"

LordOfEntropy 04-30-2006 09:57 AM

Bellamy's driven me crazy on occassion. Remember the time he got juked out of his shoes by a QB at the 3 yard line? Other times, he's persevered and shined against all odd. But he's just too old to remain when we have young un's in the fold. He's gone.

BlackandBlue 04-30-2006 09:58 AM

that QB was Delhomme, and yes i remember, i was standing a foot away from my tv screen, cursing bellamy's name.

Saintsfan66 04-30-2006 10:08 AM

I cant believe that we will let Smith go.. It realy doesn't make sence to me unless we get a trade offer from somebody shopping a decent run stopping DT. If we let Smith go, considering the cheap ass contract we have him signed to, for anything but a extreme need, I'll be pissed.

pakowitz 04-30-2006 10:45 AM

delhomme? i thought it was david carr.....

BlackandBlue 04-30-2006 11:02 AM

carr incident happened more recently. the carr run was all over the media.....that was another ugly example.

Once more for the guys in the back row: I am glad we got Bush, but not convince we weren't his second pick. he does amazing things on the field, but the Jets did well in the draft too.

Anything else you want me clear up?

I'd rather pay two guys with the rare skill talent of Deuce and Bush big money instead of having it tied up in two OL. Of course, I realize it's important to have guys that can block, but like another thread on here talked about, you don't need to have multiple Pro-Bowlers on the OL to win games.

There aren't many teams in the league that tie up a ton of money on more than one OL. The Seahawks are a good example. They had two great OL in Walter Jones and Hutchinson. They know what those two combined to do for them. The Vikings come in and offer Hutchinson the biggest contract for a guard ever. The Seahawks let him go, but sign Vikings WR Burlenson to the same years/money that Hutchinson got. That says to me they value more adding a skill player that can put points on the board over a Pro-Bowl OL, and that they think he's replaceable. Whether everyone agrees with that, I don't know, but the coach that made the decision has been to more Super Bowls than our Saints have won playoff games.

As good as Bentley is, I wouldn't want to see us tie up over 5 million a year in him. A tackle like Ferguson, yes. When it comes time for the Jets to decide which to keep it'll be Ferguson. After all they just let a guy go who went to Hawaii every year for them at center in Mawae.

We do have some other needs, but the name of the game is to put up more points than the other team and Bush can do that in ways that almost no one else in the league can.

LivnaLieTimay 04-30-2006 11:47 AM

I see where you are coming from Jeremy. One thing I've always thought is that you can teach oline. Look at the Broncos, they scheme real well with their oline and year in and year out they are one of the best lines. You take each Bronco olineman individually and they aren't that great, but they play together and their coaches have great schemes. You can't teach what Reggie Bush and other skill players do. You can't teach a guy to juke a player out or take a play to the house the way Reggie does.

papz 04-30-2006 12:04 PM

So far... great second day guys. I'm stoked! A OT who's probably going to be moved inside to guard and a another DE. We can never have enough of those guys. Yes!

Orien Harris to Pittsburg... no comment. Did everyone just see how ESPN was talking about how Pittsburg always have good drafts and they have excellent scouts? When was the last time we had a rave review?

BlackandBlue 04-30-2006 01:37 PM

wow...i have no comment on these selections. takes the air right out of your balloon.

gandhi1007 04-30-2006 02:47 PM

I must say that this has been a typical draft for me as a Saints fan. You know...throwing sh** around & yelling at the T.V. If I had any faith in the new regime, it is now gone. WTF? Besides the Bush pick, our draft sucked a**. Let's review: We have a chance at Winston Justice or Marcus McNeil at #34 & we trade down to get Jeff Faine (Stinchcomb part deux) & we use the pick at #43 on Roman Harper? Hello...Ko Simpson in the later rounds. WTF? Then we have a shot at Max Jeanne-Gilles, Orien Harris, or Oshinudo (DT-Stanford) & we trade down again to pick up Jahri Evans. Who???? This guy would have been there in the 5th or 6th! Then we pick up Rob Ninkovich (a special team DE at best) in the 5th. I liked the Mike Haas pick in the 6th. He has great hands & is a solid possession guy, but I would have preferred Marques Colston WR-Hofstra if we were going to go receiver. Hands are great & he's 6'5"-225 lbs. And Josh Lay? They meant Josh "Lay Down In Coverage." I could never give this draft a thumbs up. Instead I give it & our FO the finger for their piss poor talent scouting.

What NFL team do you work for, gandhi?

papz 04-30-2006 02:50 PM

Stop that gandhi... don't forget we got Reggie Bush!

Yeah, we filled all those positions of need.

I'm with Ghandi about this weekend.

I fear for WhoDi's health after some of the bonehead moves we've made.

ssmitty 04-30-2006 02:59 PM

like i said, i'll reserve judgement...............this will be paytons team, not hasletts..............
i like what he has shown since he got here, and that won't change until he pulls a haslett........smitty

lol gandhi... I don't think you read the first post of this thread.

BiggPoppaFro4 04-30-2006 03:17 PM

You are right, you can't teach what Bush can do, but you also can't do what bush can do without a good OLine. You don't have to have multiple ProBowlers on the OLine to win, but it helps. May be a contributing factor to Pittsburgh, Seattle and Indy success. You make sense Jeremy but I am still simply saying that the Jets did well; their strategy worked. As I've posted elsewhere, our FO did well also by not reaching and actually picking the large, gift-wrapped present the Texans left for us rather than taking a sh**** deal just b/c it was there. You don't pass on Bush unless someone is willing to give up a Ricky sized pile for him.

Am I bi****** and moaning at the choice of Bush...No...I saved that for the other picks.

Besides, this seems a dead issue. we are all in agreement, just established on different angles of attack.

I read it papz & I feel the exact same way. It will take many years of therapy to get over this draft. I was ecstatic that we got Bush, but it all went to hell after that.

papz 04-30-2006 03:20 PM

I'm not going to lie though but our 6th and 7th round picks are looking pretty good. I guess the draft ended on a good note with that tackle from Northwestern. He's really not that bad especially with it being this late.

wheelman 04-30-2006 03:31 PM

We have another pick, papz. #252

papz 04-30-2006 03:39 PM

Whoohoo... maybe we should start trading our higher picks for 6 and 7th rounders. We're on a roll with these picks. And no, I'm not being sarcastic. 8)

Well guys to all of you who are highly disappointed what I would suggest to you is to just stop watching the draft all together. You guys have said it yourself that the draft does nothing but disappoint you every year in and year out. And speaking on pure probability, if you have your specific players that you hope get drafted, chances are high that you will be upset by the end of the day. But looking at the picks, some needs were addressed. Two offensive tackles were taken, and we took a CB, We could have had Winston Justice true....it's disappointing but OT was addressed. Kiper just said we caught a steal in Zach Strief.

A teams' success for the year is not made or broken by the draft. The average team is lucky to get ONE starter out of the draft, unless they are truely horrible, which I don't think we are. The draft is ONE COMPONENT of the offseason, and not even the most iimportant. We did well in free agency signing DREW BREES, Scott Fujita, Anthony Simmons, Omar Stoutmire, and others. Then there are still the June 1st cuts. This draft wasn't the best, for sure, but it is FAR from the worst. I believe we also had a sucky draft the year we made the playoffs too. We didn't even have a first rounder that year. Can't see how people can be down on this year when we have had our best offseason overall in YEARS.

BiggPoppaFro4 04-30-2006 03:55 PM

Ok,here's the thing...people are going to question the picks our FO makes. It is inevitable and this sounding board right here is where you are going to see those thoughts. No one here thinks that the apocalypse of our team is nigh withthe selection of Josh Lay. Just as all those same naysayers know that we still have minicamp, June 1, mini camp, training camp and ....then the season.

For the love of God, and all things holy, let folks vent and then point out the positive aspects. Reading ya'lls posts has convinced me that Harper may just end up as a really great pick, even at rnd 2. Strief and Evans, added to Faine, give us great depth on O line where 48 hrs agoeveryone here was wondering who, other than Brown, would be playing up front.

In 2-3 days we will all be singing the praises of the FO moves these last 2 days. For now emotions will run high.

LSUJeremy 04-30-2006 03:55 PM

I didn't think it was possible after getting Bush, but this draft looks like crap to me. I watch a lot of SEC football, and I watched a lot of good players get picked around the guys we picked that would have been better choices for us.

Yes, I realize I'm not a scout, blah, blah, blah, but this isn't brain surgery. You look in the SEC and you take guys who played against the best competition. You see how they did, and you take the good ones. What the hell has a kid from Bloomberg done that would make you want him over a guy in the same position from a big name school that played in big games against good competition?

It's as if our scouts spend more time trying to find some sleeper/diamond in the rough instead of taking the guy that everyone's heard of - meaning there's a LOT more info on the guy....

Screw it. My head's starting to hurt. I don't even feel like bothering to post why these picks suck. And I'm one of those optimistic Saints fans.

gandhi1007 04-30-2006 03:56 PM

I like the 6th & 7th round picks. Haas & Streif are both solid players. Maybe the day will be saved.

smyce 04-30-2006 04:01 PM

We are the worst drafting team in history.

spkb25 04-30-2006 04:09 PM

and i think this is the baest complete draft we have had in some time. i really like th guys we added and think they will help us. i think we already have quite a few stars. now we need some guys to go out and be grunts. just hard workers who don't take a play off and are football smart. i think we have got that in this draft. you may not know these guys but probably no one knew brady or expected him to be what he is. probably no one thought bockwoldt would turn into as quickly as he did a decent player. we got some football players and i like that.

gandhi1007 04-30-2006 04:14 PM

spkb. while I love your enthusiasm, Bockwoldt would be a special teamer at best for any other team in the league. I like our late round picks, but in the 2nd, 4th, & 5th, I feel like we reached. The character bios on these guys are great, but there were better players (without character problems) in those rounds.

wheelman 04-30-2006 04:17 PM

And most of the players you are thinking of, gandhi, felt to either the third or fourth round. The entire NFL had the same problems with those players as we did

spkb25 04-30-2006 04:20 PM

hey ghandi it isn't about them not having chracter problems it was about some guys taking plays off and i am not saying that is for sure the case with those guys. i don't know. some of those guys you talk about will end up being reserve guys their entire career. you know like a fat arse name sully. simple as that. they are smart and work hard and that is enough for me. i have said that when i watched some teams last year they were losing but they fought hard. not like us going out and getting the ever living **** kicked out of us by a team that hadn't won a game and ended up qwinning only 4 for the year. but they dropped like a 50 spot on us. and that wasn't the first time under haz that that happened. give me guys that fight and i will take that every time. with those type of guys it is only a matter of time until you win.

LSUJeremy 04-30-2006 04:24 PM

All this character talk makes me think of one thing - "I want a bunch of Grabowski's."

Danny Weurfful, Troy Davis, Rob Kelly, etc.

That didn't work so good.

gandhi1007 04-30-2006 04:25 PM

I agree. I just don't like using a mid-rounder for a guy that would have probably been there in the later rounds.

wheelman 04-30-2006 04:26 PM

Only because our quarterbacks stunk.

spkb25 04-30-2006 04:27 PM

hey lsu here some names roy williams, mike williams, kevin jones, and charles rogers and they frigan stink brother
