Are you trying to read my mind? What players am I thinking of that fell to the third or fourth round? The only player I mentioned was Ko Simpson, who would have been an early round pick next year had he stayed in college. According to Kiper, he would have been a possible 1st rounder next year.

Roy Williams is very good for the Lions, and Kevin Jones has played pretty well also.

A guy who would've made total sense as a combination of character, ability, productivity, and a Saints posistion of need is LSU DT Kyle Williams. Watch what he does for Buffalo.

spkb25 04-30-2006 04:32 PM

i don't care ho pretty good they have been for the lions. they as a TEAM keep losing. four first rounders last three years and um they keep losing

gandhi1007 04-30-2006 04:33 PM

Kevin Jones & Roy Williams aren't bad ball players. Roy is a little inconsistent, but remember those receivers you named? Who was their QB?

Sorry, spkb. I couldn't help it. I think with Martz, that offense will do well.

wheelman 04-30-2006 04:35 PM

But he didn't stay in school, and fell to the fourth round because of it. Abdul Hodge fell to the third, as did Youboty, and Gilles. Justice was selected before the 43rd pick. Rattle off a player's name, and all but maybe 3 of them were either selected before the 43rd pick, or fell to the third round or later. We were not the only team in the NFL that saw question marks in the players that we have been talking about all off-season.

spkb25 04-30-2006 04:35 PM

i have said that all along ghandi but the point is they haven't done anything yet. so don't tell me just drafting the guys that look will be great makes your team great because it hasn't worked for them

Thank you wheelman for proving my point for me. If those guys lasted as long as they did, do you really think that Roman Harper was worth our only other 1st day pick? :?

spkb25 04-30-2006 04:43 PM

i think harper is going to be a good player for us.

in the words of haz he is one heckuva a player. haha j/k

wheelman 04-30-2006 04:47 PM

I didn't make your point at all. If NFL front offices thought as highly of those players as you do, why did they last so long? You keep saying that we could have picked them, but you can say the same thing about every other team that had a second round pick. Those players lasted so long for a reason, and every team in the league saw it.

gandhi1007 04-30-2006 04:55 PM

It's called NEEDS. And my point was that we reached on some picks. Especially the Roman Harper one. If that's the guy they really wanted, fine. But, trade down some more & pick up extra picks. He would have been there later. There was better talent in the second round that would have been more worthy of the pick. If you were scared of the more talented guys worthy of a second rounder, trade down.....that simple. Don't waste a pick on a guy that would have been a 3rd-4th rounder with a 2nd round pick.

And for the record, Winston Justice, D'Qwell Jackson, Jimmy Williams, & Marcus McNeil all DID go in the second round.

wheelman 04-30-2006 05:00 PM

We don't know what round he would have been drafted in because different publications had him going in different spots. He's one of those guys that scouts had widely varying opinions on. And I still don't buy the Smith trade talk that was posted in another thread because there is no link provided. Until I see him actually traded, I will go on assuming that he will be moved to corner.

spkb25 04-30-2006 05:09 PM

hey wheel just to post to you in one of paytons audio clips and i think it is on the harper pick he did say we weren't looking to move any safety's to corner. obviously that could change but that is what he said

All of the players you mentioned were selected before the 43rd pick, except for McNeil.

Uhmm....Before the trade, we had the #34 pick. Hello, McFly??? :?

pakowitz 04-30-2006 05:16 PM

but we made the move back to get us a center with NFL starting experience... and we still got a good player

wheelman 04-30-2006 05:29 PM

We traded with Cleveland in order to get a veteran starting center, because the front office and coaching staff were obviously not impressed with the centers available after Mangold. We already have two players capable of filling the hole at right tackle in Stinch and Mayberry, so center became priority of the offense. And I didn't like McNeil anyway. Frankly, I think he looks like a lazy fat*** that succeeded because of the players around him.

On defense, remember, you people were the ones praising the hiring of Gibbs as the defensive coordinator. I didn't like it, but I was attacked for it. I see not drafting a linebacker as a direct result of his input. The man must believe they can field a competent defense with the linebacking corps the way it is.

The addition of Reggie Bush also improves our defense. Having him on the roster means improved field position and longer Time of possession. A defense can do wonders if it has 35 to 40 minutes to rest on the bench.

spkb25 04-30-2006 05:31 PM

hey wheel or if you are scoring points and making teams catch up that always helps. hey we as saint fans know something about that.

TIGERSAINT31 04-30-2006 07:43 PM

I know some people are down on the harper pick, but he was rated to go anywhere from mid second to early third which is where we took him. I will hold off on my opinion and see what he does on the field. I would have rather had a cornerback that would evetually be a starter, but he is a saint now let's see what he's got.
