this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; This really hasn't been discussed. Haven't seen it on the news anywhere. I know it's not as big a deal as it used to be, but I think it's still worth mentioning....

RE: Deuce goes over 1000yds
I was talking about this last week with my roommate.
Neither of us could figure out why it doesn't seem as big of an accomplishment anymore. If you look at the NFL stats there'll be over 20 players with 1,000 yards rushing this year. I remember in the late '80's and early '90's it being more of a big deal. There haven't been games added since then, so what changed? |

Isn't this his 4th year to go over 1000 yds? That in itself is amazing. Until this year he hasn't had the best of lines in front of him.

Yep, not quite as special as it used to be, but still a big accomplishment considering the return from injury and Reggie getting his share of the rushing touches. Deuce deserves huge thanks for his effort and leadership this season.

It's not that special anymore because it's easily attainable these days. With Tomlinson, Barber, Johnson, Alexander, etc... the bar has been raised. I read somewhere a couple of years ago, I can't remember where, 1300 is the new 1000 as far as elite backs are concerned (I hope that made sense).
With that said, congrats Deuce. He's had a great season while sharing touches with Reggie and our lack of emphasis on the running game this year. |

Yes, but what makes it easier now than it use to be?

If I had to guess, I'd say that the rules that were intended to open up the passing game have also worked towards opening up the running game. If defenses have a harder time stopping the pass, then they have to commit resources towards stopping it. Those resources are taken away from stopping the run and result in more rushing yards per game. A Rb only needs about 65 ypg to reach 1000 for the season assuming he plays in all 16. You may also want to take into account the lack of tackling technique (see the Colts D).

I am happy for Deuce and I hope he continues to do well, as long as he is with the Saints.
