I think the Saints have three 4th round picks....so using one on a possible starting CB that would at the least bolster the depth at the position seems good to me. I haven't heard much about David, but he sounds like he could contribute.

IT’S BEEN AN EVENTFUL month for former Cougar cornerback Jason David. On Friday, the restricted free agent signed an offer sheet with the New Orleans Saints that the Colts can meet or beat if they want to retain the three-year starter. Two weeks ago, David received one of the largest bonuses in the NFL’s performance-based pay system that aims to more fairly match compensation with playing time.

Jason David started every game for the Super Bowl champions and earned a base salary of about $350,000. Through the performance-based system, he just got another $181,000.

In 2006 he had 53 tackles, including 38 solos, plus two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

The performance-pay system is built around an index that compares the relative playing time and salary of each team’s players. In 2005, the NFL’s single-largest performance bonus -- $228,000 -- went to David’s old batterymate at Washington State: Erik Coleman of the Jets.

If David, who has started 43 games in his three NFL seasons, ends up with the Saints, the Colts would receive a draft pick as compensation.

Under restricted free agency, the round of the draft pick must be the same one that the player in question came into the league with.

In David’s case, that be the fourth round -– effectively giving the Saints a true steal of a deal.

Saints, CB David in contract negotiations

The Saints began contract negotiations with restricted free agent cornerback Jason David over the weekend.

If David signs an offer sheet, the deal could contain a "poison pill" that would make the contract frontloaded. The Saints have three fourth-round picks and would forfeit one if Indianapolis fails to match the proposal. David is expected to command a similar deal to the one Rod Hood got. Apr. 16 - 4:13 pm et

I hope we get him. Hopefully the contract included some kind of poison pill like what the Pats did with Wes Walker... ensuring that David will be a Saint. A 4th round compensation is not bad at all.

I really hope the saints get this guy... this guy would help us out big time!!!! this guy is a four year starter and he will only be 25 this coming season... hes still young and will only get better

He's better than no corner, whodi! Remember, Fred Thomas had won the "Elvis Patterson Toast" Award.

We need to sign this guy and look to replace Horn in the first round.

I think this would be a great pickup. This offseason the Saints have leveraged themselves for the draft through the free agent signings and trades they have made to at least partially address need positions so that at worst, those positions are manned with players who are at least servicable.

The resigning of Shanle and the signing of Simmons bolstered our LB corps, the trade for Mare eliminated the need for a big legged K, the resigning of Copper and signing of Patten, and now the potential signing of David have eliminated any position as a real dire need and will allow the Saints to leverage more of a BPA strategy for the draft and even further strengthen these positions as needed.

Shefter says David will sign the offer sheet.
