A Look at The Quarterbacks
A Look at The Quarterbacks
NewOrleansSaints.com Thursday, July 19, 2007 - 10:00 AM QUARTERBACKS Drew Brees: 7th NFL Season; 2nd with Saints Jamie Martin: 13th NFL Season; 2nd with Saints Jason Fife: 1st NFL Season (accrued season under NFL guidelines); 2nd with Saints Tyler Palko: Rookie Season; 1st with Saints Drew Brees BREES: Spearheading the Saints’ offense is Drew Brees, who enters his second season with the Saints. Brees joined the Saints in 2006 as an unrestricted free agent acquisition following five seasons in San Diego and went on to vie for the NFL MVP title after posting a passer rating of over 96 and earned the nod as the starting QB for the NFC Pro Bowl squad. Brees, the leader of the offense, is as dynamic and heady a player as they come. Surrounded by plenty of talent, a creative and dynamic offensive set and having a full season in Head Coach Sean Payton and Doug Marrone’s complex offensive system, Brees should continue to be considered among the NFL’s most dangerous and reliable quarterbacks. Brees had five games in 2006 with a passer rating of over 105. Jamie Martin photo by Michael C. HebertBrees By The Number: 111 TD passes in 77 career starts, an average of 1.44 per game. MARTIN: Returning to back up Brees is seasoned veteran Jamie Martin. Martin is smart, has a wealth of experience and has filled in countless times in big spots throughout his career. Martin, a product of Weber State on Utah, has played for the St. Louis Rams, Washington Redskins, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets and Saints during his career. Martin has played in 50 career games and thrown for nearly 4,000 yards. Martin By The Number: 81.9: Martin’s career passer rating Jason Fife photo by Michael C. HebertFIFE: Jason Fife is a heady and crafty youngster who benefited from a year in the Saints’ system, splitting time between the 53-man roster and the practice squad. Fife, hailing from Mike Bellotti’s passer-driven offense at the University of Oregon, and spent time in NFL Europe after stints with the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions earlier in his career. Fife By The Number: 30: TD passes thrown as a collegian at Oregon QB Tyler Palko PALKO: Signed as an undrafted free agent from the University of Pittsburgh, Tyler Palko is the youngster of the group. The left-handed signal caller is a competitor and has been around the game of football his entire life, as his father, Bob, is one of the top prep coaches in Pittsburgh. Palko has shown a strong arm and mobility and along with the rest of the quarterbacks, stands to benefit from the Saints’ five preseason games in 2007. Palko was a three-year starter for the Panthers and trails only Dan Marino and former Buffalo Bill Alex Van Pelt for career TD passes. Palko By The Number: 66: TD aerials on the college level |

It wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit if Fife and Palko performed well enough to push out Martin.

I said it before and I'll say it again, I love Martin as Drew's backup.
Martin may not be a quality starter in the NFL but is safe as a backup, Jamie can still play well. Let's just hope the Saints can keep Brees standing all season because he will be the difference for the Saints, the guy is simply a winner and a great citizen for N.O |
