Cool LOCAL DRILL: Michael Lewis

Sunday, October 07, 2007
By Brian Allee-Walsh

Name: MICHAEL LEWIS

Team: 49ERS

Position: KR/PR

Age: 35

Ht: 5-8 Wt: 173

T-P: What was it like sitting around waiting to get a call from another team?

Lewis: It took patience. A guy like Fred McAfee went through the same thing and seeing a guy like that made me know you got to have patience. You got to keep working out and make sure when that call comes that you're ready for it.

T-P: Did you think your career might be over?

Lewis: No, not really. It's just a waiting game. Fred McAfee was way older than me when he came back so I never looked at it like my career was over. I was just waiting on teams to make moves.

T-P: Did you get calls from teams other than San Francisco?

Lewis: Miami and Arizona.

T-P: Are you working at wide receiver or just a return specialist?

Lewis: I'm just handling punts right now. Hopefully, I'll work myself into getting some kick returns. Whatever I'm called upon to do, I'll do it. I've got to learn the playbook at wide receiver, that's something totally different.

T-P: What is your reaction to the Saints' 0-3 start?

Lewis: It's kind of hard to believe after going to war with those guys last year. You go from going to the NFC championship to 0-3. But they'll get it together. Knowing those guys, I have a lot of confidence that they'll come together.

T-P: Did you see your release coming in New Orleans?

Lewis: No, not really. I didn't see it coming. But you always got to keep things in perspective. Things happen. They wanted to go in a different direction, so I had to go in a different direction. But I wasn't upset because they gave me my start.

T-P: Are you looking forward to the Saints-49ers game at Monster Park on Oct. 28?

Lewis: Yes I am, just to get a chance to go against the team that I played for my whole career. Just to see the guys again. That's important as well. I wanted to be with them, but this is a business and I'll do what I have to do.
