Well lets say we keep Deuce and he get hurt. Then Deuce gets hurt. We're going to need a big running game with Brunell. I just think that we need a player that can start and make a difference. Face it, the Saints win with offense and it puts butts in the seats. Then there is the Payton factor. Will he be able to resist? Yes we need defense more, but RB IS ONE POSITION that can not be IGNORED no matter how strong you think we are. Hum? What will Payton do. Will he peeve this board????

When I started this thread, I didn't know it would start a mini riot. LOL

all in all I think we'll end up drafting Keith Rivers and drafing a RB in the 3rd or 4th round, because we don't need a starting calibre RB, but we do need depth.

If we spend our #1 on any offensive player without trading down and getting a 2 for 1, I'll be completely pissed. That pick must produce an impact defensive starter at some level of the defense. Be it Rivers, or one of the DB, or a DT, we need an impact player.

We need another high draft pick at RB like I need another hole in my head. We played more than 1/2 the season without Deuce. Reggie isn't a feature back and PT23 is the truth. When your #4 back racks up 200+ total yards against a decent defense, you don't need any more running backs.

You have 4 backs now: Deuce and Reggie are the starters and Stecker and PT23 are the backups. Karney opens up holes and catches the occasional ball.

That's all we need at running back. Thanks for playing.

Good post SFIAH, I completely agree. We already have so many backs under contract that, including two making first round money, that signing another one to #10 overall money just doesn't make sense. Financially it doesn't make sense, and from a football standpoint, it doesn't make sense IMO either. We need help on defense, period.

Excellent point-
another factor is that we have two good backups in Stecker and PT that we would literally have to give away. With 5 tailbacks on the roster, no team would give a 7th for either one.

Lets not forget what wins championship we cant keep ignoring the defense. If we had a defense 2 years ago we would've beat the Bears and gone to the superbowl. Impoving an already good offense is not going to take us the the next step we NEED to get this defense on the right track.

Rashard Mendenh would be connected to Duce not Bush, PT or Stecker. Bush is in his own little world. PT and Stecker are battling for the #3. Nothing wrong with carrying 5 RB

Same as last year.

Brunell?! Where in the hell did Brunell come from? If Brees gets hurt, the season is lost. Brees is the one irreplaceable player on the Saints team. It makes no sense making Round 1 decisions based on Brees getting hurt.

I agree. Just not a running back. It's the same argument I keep seeing about WR and TE. We have 6 WR that have started for us. 3 TE that have done the same. The 4th back on our team absolutely shredded the Bears last December.

We don't need a starter. We need a back that can get tough yards in clutch situations. Now Reggie isn't that back. But PT23 is the backup that can do that.

We need starters on defense. We have the absolute worst DB in the league as our starting CB. We have a limited pass rush. We need a defender that can line up and play on opening day.

Any other #1 pick other than a defensive starter is a waste.

Actually if you look at last season, the Saints lost with offense. That's exactly why we need to continue to shore up the defense

He may. I'll be pissed. He's already pulled that stunt last year. But that's when they thought that with David they had solved the defensive backfield problem. They should well know that David is a waste of space back there and that they need to continue to shore up the defense.

What would you expect? The Saints offense is predicated on slinging the ball all over the field, not pounding the rock. You have 4 backs that can tote the rock. 3 of them were injured badly enough not to be able to play by the end of the season last year. You can't pick based on that happening again.

Re: RUMOR: Saints Targeting Illinois RB Rashard Mendenh

Dear SaintFanInHell....

I won't be unhappy if the Saints pick a CB, LB or DT. It's just that our coach will be tempted to pick RB so much that it's worth a thread about it. I've stated the reasons why I think it make since. RB did well even in the poll for the Saints pick meaning that many here believe it would be a good pick.

Besides QB, RB is the one position that changes everything because he'll touch the ball 20-30 times a game. Do we really need another Duece type of back to make Reggie and the rest of the offense more effective? Will it help protect Brees and help him to get rid of the ball sooner?

It doesn't matter what I think, it only matters what my avatar thinks.
