What are the qualifications to be a "real fan"?

At what point does a fan quit being someone on the bandwagon and become a "real fan"? Does it take one year, two years, a decade or longer? Is it about being there in the ups and downs? If someone started rooting for the Saints after Katrina because of the media attention and are still fans, are they still just on the bandwagon? What are the criteria and qualifications to becoming a "real Saints fan"?

BTW, do you think it's hereditary? You know, some other addictions are inherited like alcohol and drug abuse. lol :drink:

When you can wear your Saints hat and shirt after a 3-13 or 7-9 season, you are a true fan not bandwagoner. But heres to not having anymore of those type seasons.

I know the wagon is getting a little crowded, but I try to remind myself that it's a good thing. Nevertheless, I do sometimes wonder where all these guys and gals were back in the day. Would have been nice to have more people to talk to - felt kinda lonely being a Saints fan back then.

I think you need to know who the Center of your team is and if you are a Saints fan also know who Guido Merkins is.

Ole Guido, he's a manager or part owner of Carmax in Houston right now. One of Bum's favorites.

Were they Black&Gold when we were 8-and-8? or 6-and-10? Yes...then they are in.
Were they Black&Gold when Brooks was getting his head pounded? Yes...then they are in.
Were they Black&Gold when Mora squeaked out victories? Yes...then they are in.
Were they cheering for Jackson, Swilling, Mills? Yes...they are in.
Do they know who Ironhead was? Yes...then they are in.
Do names like Wes Chandler, Tommy Myers, or the number 8 mean anything? Yes...then they are in.
If you don't know who Tom Dempsy is, then you need to go back to where you came from.

That would be Wes Chandler. Chris played for dirtybirds among others.

i feel like im not a fan because i dont fit all the criteria some of you old farts are throwing out

but i know if you have been through the hard times and still come out a saints fan then you definitly get my vote

if you are still a fan after the countless 3-13 seasons we've had then you have my respect....if you are a fan this season because you root for the best team then you get no soup

but if you're too young or you've been in limbo for ahwile and you're willing to make a commitment....you are more than welcome to share my kool-aid

A true fan vomits at the beginning of every 4th quarter, regardless of the score. I won't say what the cause is, but all true fans know...

walk to the alleged Saints fan, and whisper "Carl Smith" in his/her ear. If he/she doesn't twitch, not a real Saints fan.

Yep! But at least now we have a real DT in Sed Ellis, not a fake one like Sullivan was.

Sullivan was ranked second on our board that year at DT. The Jets, as I recall, beat us to our first choice.

Smith was pretty lousy as an OC, but, if you remember, it was Mora who refused to fire him.

Also, remember, Jim Finks didn't do real well drafting and signing players on the offensive side of the ball (at least, not skill position players). If he had, the Saints may already have had a couple of Lombardi's in the trophy case.

Oh, I remember so very well :). That's why hearing the name "Carl Smith" makes me twitch. Heck, I'm twitching as I ttttttttype.

I don't think that's particularly fair......not everybody has been around that long. I mean, my 15-year old nephew doesn't remember anything before Brooks and Haslett.

I do remember Carl Smith (and his godawful run-run-7 pass to Eric Martin-punt offense) but I'm not going to say I'm a "realer" fan than that kid, because he's body-painting himself head to toe every week.

Re: What are the qualifications to be a "real fan"?

I think at least remembering the Ditka/Williams 98 draft debacle, would be a good start. As well as the age of "Billy Joe". Or how about Jim Everette? Or "Chrissy" as Jim Rome likes to call him. Heh heh, there's alot of colorful history for the Saints. Not great winning teams, but lots of entertainment.

If they really really love The Saints they are a true fan. Sometimes it take a while to catch.

Re: What are the qualifications to be a "real fan"?

Being a Saints fan isn't a quiz show. No amount of trivia knowledge will make you a fan and not knowing who played left tackle in 1972 against the Eagles doesn't make you any less of a fan.

If you love the Saints you are a fan. It is that simple.

If you have fond feeling for any man who ever strapped on a Saints helmet you are a fan of the Saints.

If you hate certain players because they didn't play as well as you wanted or ruined the Saints chances you aren't a Saints fan.

You are a fan of success.

Part of me doesn't want the Saints to ever win the Superbowl. A large part of the fun of being a Saints fan is the fact that we keep coming back and loving this team although they have never won the big game.

Once the Saints win the Superbowl, it will be easy to be a Saints fan. We will stop looking forward, always looking to next year. We will become like all those sad fans pointing backwards to the glory of yesteryear.

Right now, "I'm a Saints fan" carries with it the pride of enduring 42 years of hardship.

Once the Saints win it all we will forever have to say "I was a Saints fan before they won the Superbowl".

I'll be celebrating like a mad man the day the Saints win the Superbowl. I hope desperately my parents live to see that day so I can see the joy in their faces.

But in my heart I know it will be bittersweet because being a Saints fan will change forever on that magical day.

Ne pas, mon ami!

I posted this on another thread... it's not that you need to know trivia... it is more like playing the Blues: you can't play the Blues if you haven't suffered in life. So it is not about, say, knowing who carl Smith was, it's about having suffered through Carl Smith calling the offense :)

Well said. If you screamed at the TV last week or the week before, and are pissed at Charles Grant, then you are a fan.

At the Falcons game Sunday they were giving away logo'ed luggage tags. I grabbed a bunch for my seventh grade students. I gave one to a student who said, "No thanks. I am a Saints fan all the way now!"
Bandwagon? Sure.
But I did get a little choked up anyhow.
