Question Did the Bengals steal this from you guys?

I've noticed that since the Palmer and Ochocinqo era began, the Bengals fans have been chanting "Who Dey? Who Dey? Who Dey Think Gonna Beat Dem Bengals?"

If I recall correctly, didn't the "Who Dat" chant begin like in the early 90's during the Pat Swilling era?

lol. Some guy claims that "Who Dey" started in 81 and "Who Dat" started in 83.

All I know is that the Bengals made it to the Super Bowl twice in the 80's and I never heard them chanting "Who Dey."

I first heard "Who Dat" when I visited NO and they had made it to the playoffs for their first time. That and "Cha Ching."

"Whodat say dey gonna beat dem Saints" < I've been hearing this phrase around here as far back as I can remember to the mid 70`s. I can't prove it, but I'm sure the Bengels picked this up after it was a popular phrase here first.
But, good observation there Boltz.

Yeah. Bengals fan are going to swear that "Who Dey" started first but there is now way to prove either.

Though I will say "Who Dat" got recognized in the sports media first.

Re: Did the Bengals steal this from you guys?

Greetings, Saints fans (and everyone else):

A link to this thread came up on my #Bengals twitter feed, so I just thought I'd reply and give you a little history on "Who Dey."

Let me preface by saying I don't think it matters that our organizations have similar cheers, or which one started first. But the Saints have been getting a lot of (deserved) media coverage in the last few years, so generally the public is more familiar with "who dat" and may assume the lowly Bengals "stole" it. Not the case.

It started in 1981, during one of the Bengals' Super Bowl seasons. In a nutshell, it started during the end run of 5 games in which the Bengals won every game by more than 2 TDs, and fans started saying "Who they think is going to beat them Bengals?" It got morphed into Who Dey thanks to local car dealership called Red Fraizer Ford, who had a very popular commercial that said "Who gonna give you a better deal than Red Fraizer Ford? Noooooobody!" Cincinnati's radio station WLW weatherman then took that and made it into a song, that among other things, said:

From the banks of the Ohio comes that orange and black machine
They're the Cincinnati Bengals The finest ever seen
With stripes upon their helmets and fire in their eyes
They'll take the field they will not yield
They're strong and tough and wise
Who Dey.Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals
Who Dey, Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals
Who Dey, Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals
Who Dey, Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals

Nooooooooooobody!

To further put the chant into legend, when the Bengals made the playoffs, the local Hudepohl beer company jumped on the Who Dey bandwagon with their own version in "Hu Dey" Beer.

And it's been around ever since. The '89 super bowl Bengals even recorded their own rap version of it:

If you're interested in all the details, it's here: whodeyorigin

Anyway, I hope that clears up some of the questions on where Who Dey came from. Good luck the rest of the way.... hope to see you all in the Super Bowl but the Bengals are obviously struggling right now. Take care.

It actually goes way back than all that... if appeared in Jazz songs in the 40's and if I recall correctly Southern University was the first know football team to use it way back... it was used by LSU and Saints. Bengals offically adopted Who Dey in 81 but Saints and Louisiana Schools were using it way before then Saints adopted it as our chant in 83 officially but as I said it goes way back.

Right on the mark. BTW the Bengals Who Dey chant started from a local Cincy commercial.

Folks just find it hard to believe that the two chants actually have independant origins. But they actually do. Neither team stole it from the other, though they are both eerily similar.
