Re: Did the Bengals steal this from you guys?
Greetings, Saints fans (and everyone else):
A link to this thread came up on my #Bengals twitter feed, so I just thought I'd reply and give you a little history on "Who Dey." Let me preface by saying I don't think it matters that our organizations have similar cheers, or which one started first. But the Saints have been getting a lot of (deserved) media coverage in the last few years, so generally the public is more familiar with "who dat" and may assume the lowly Bengals "stole" it. Not the case. It started in 1981, during one of the Bengals' Super Bowl seasons. In a nutshell, it started during the end run of 5 games in which the Bengals won every game by more than 2 TDs, and fans started saying "Who they think is going to beat them Bengals?" It got morphed into Who Dey thanks to local car dealership called Red Fraizer Ford, who had a very popular commercial that said "Who gonna give you a better deal than Red Fraizer Ford? Noooooobody!" Cincinnati's radio station WLW weatherman then took that and made it into a song, that among other things, said: From the banks of the Ohio comes that orange and black machine They're the Cincinnati Bengals The finest ever seen With stripes upon their helmets and fire in their eyes They'll take the field they will not yield They're strong and tough and wise Who Dey.Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals Who Dey, Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals Who Dey, Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals Who Dey, Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals Nooooooooooobody! To further put the chant into legend, when the Bengals made the playoffs, the local Hudepohl beer company jumped on the Who Dey bandwagon with their own version in "Hu Dey" Beer. And it's been around ever since. The '89 super bowl Bengals even recorded their own rap version of it: If you're interested in all the details, it's here: whodeyorigin Anyway, I hope that clears up some of the questions on where Who Dey came from. Good luck the rest of the way.... hope to see you all in the Super Bowl but the Bengals are obviously struggling right now. Take care. |

Here you want proof!?!?!
Who Dat? - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Hard to think that Who Dey is original... maybe a spin off but not original. |
