Just plain stupid.

...hmmm..so what happens if the kicking team decides to kick an onsides kick? If they recover, since they lost the coin toss, would they still be able to win it with a field goal, or by rule would the other team HAVE to have a possession?

very curious

maybe they have forfeited their possession by giving up an onside kick?

of course nobody probably expected this to be an issue because nobody ever expects the secret ambush play in the super bowl

unless you have the iphone app that reads sean payton's mind

Both teams get at least one possession unless the first team scores a touchdown.

What they did not address is who wins if the first team scores a field goal, kicks onside, recovers and scores another field goal.

I cannot wait for this scenario to develop and I know just the coach to do it.

More drama = more money. I would have left it alone. The team winning the toss still has to execute and so does the D. You have the whole game to produce a different outcome.

Can they defer it?

.

That's what I am really curious about. Is this new rule GUARANTEEING possession for both teams? I mentioned the onside kick, but what about muffed kick offs recovered by the kicking team? Would the muff count as your possession, or you are still guaranteed a possession?

Or what if the kicking team onside kicks, recovers, scores a FG, then onside kicks and recovers again? Is the game over, or still both teams are guaranteed a possession?

Or maybe even the kicking team doing 2 successful onside kicks on a row, and scoring a FG and a TD or 2 TDs?

I would guess that the team that is designated to receive the kick (wins toss) is on guard so to speak once the kick happens. So if they give up an outsides kick or fumble kickoff, the other team gets to win with a FG. Basically no different than getting the kick and going three and out.

I don't think they thought it through very thoroughly. It will make for some interesting commentary from the dopes that call the games on TV.

Does a safety win the game? If you kickoff, your defense scores a safety and the other team has to kick to you. both teams get a possession so a safety should win it.

It would be quite funny to be able to win by scoring two points but have to give the other guy a chance if you score three.

I think we may need lawyers to decide overtime playoff games.

It seems it would have been much easier to keep it sudden death and just eliminate field goals in playoff overtime.
