New Orleans Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis and Coach Sean Payton were vague about their reasons for releasing veteran defensive end Bobby McCray last month before re-signing him last week.

Part of it was a cost-saving measure - McCray was due a $1.25 million roster bonus in July.

But they also indicated that they weren't originally planning to bring McCray back until they felt confident about his attitude and commitment.

"I didn't necessarily anticipate bringing him back when we terminated his contract. But some things happened during the course of the last 30 days," Loomis said. "(It was) just some conversations we had between us. We set some expectations. I think I'll leave it at that."

"It was just having a chance to spend more time with Bobby," Payton added, though he also said the "specific dialogue would be better off just privy to us."

"We're glad he's back," Payton said. "He's in good shape. He ran well (in conditioning tests). He had a good offseason."

McCray, who turns 29 in August, had a decent but inconsistent season in 2009. He had just 1.5 sacks while battling a back injury throughout the year, then he stepped up in the playoffs, starting all three games after Charles Grant was injured in Week 17.

Off the field, however, McCray was late for at least two meetings, and he was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence in late December.

The Saints released Grant this offseason, but they added veteran free agents Alex Brown and Jimmy Wilkerson, which made McCray temporarily expendable.

Appears he had some attitude and commitment problems. That I did not know.
