Confession time: Who here wanted Culpepper?

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I wanted the Saints to get him over Brees, and I'm not embarrassed to admit it. My opinion was skewed because I rarely watched any Chargers' games, but I watched all Vikings' games, so I had no idea how great ...

Wow, this is a pretty cool post. I can't really say because I didn't think either one was going to make it. I thought we were going for Matt Leinart in the draft, and he was going to take his lumps the first yr anyway.

Then I'd have to say I got caught up in all the Reggie hype on draft day.
Thinking it really didn't matter who was going to take the snaps. Because there was all those analyst and writers (you know the ones that put out those gay as polls) who said Reggie was the next Gale Sayers. I bought into that, like buying a lemon from a used car salesman!

I HATE ATLANTA

I think I have you beat! I was wanting Cutler because I didn't think Bree's would be able to come back from that injury.

No. I remember it was just the talking heads calling Drew's injury career threatening. All the former players (including Archie) and medical folks like the surgeon to the stars Dr. Andrews (Even though he has since changed his story recently for more TV time) all said the injury was not career threatening.

I definitely wanted Brees the second I heard we had a shot at getting him. I had been paying a lot of attention to the Chargers at that point, mainly because of L.T. He was great fun to watch in his prime. I knew damn well Drew was a super high quality QB.

I did think Culpepper could be a good QB, but it was way too soon after his injury for him to be playing. He SHREDDED that knee. He tore the ACL, the MCL, AND the PCL. He should NOT have been on a football field at ALL that season.

Now, before the Drew option came up, the two QBs I was interested in were Kyle Boller and Jon Kitna. After a few rough years, it really looked like Boller finally got it! He was playing his ass off at the end of the '05 season. Then they replaced him with McNair. And Kitna I always felt was a good QB, stuck on a lousy Bengals team. I figured he could be the game manager that we needed in New Orleans. With Deuce and Horn and Pathon we had a good enough offense to win games as long as we had a QB who could actually read a defense and not throw the f'n ball backwards or drop it for no good reason.

We were up near 30 points a game on average during that time as I recall...not to beat a dead horse or anything.

I was a big advocate for drafting Leinart as well. Goes to show you just never know how things work out and their are no sure things as far as draft picks are concerned.

I'm not sure if I wanted Culpepper or not, but I do remember thinking the money we signed Brees for was excessive. Well... he was worth every penny and then some.

I also remember people ripping his arm strength and I thought it was completely overblown. I think I remember the exact play I used to prove my point. I believe it was a 50 yard laser he threw against the Jets for a touchdown.

I didn't want Culpepper when he was healthy!!

He couldn't do much, even with Cris Carter and Randy Moss, so what was he going to do with our receivers?

Still be an upgrade to Aaron Brooks.
