Payton has an eye for talent

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; If he has such a great eye for talent, then why didn't he know that he sucked as an NFL QB... or maybe he did know. I just wanted to add this from the article... Originally Posted by article The ...

Some think we gave up too much for Morstead and have even gone as far as saying that the punter is the least important position on the team.

I think that if there would have been someone there that Payton really wanted, then he wouldn't have given those picks for Morstead. I also believe that he really wanted this guy and since he didn't really want anyone else that was left on the board, he went ahead and made the play to get a really good, dependable punter who can also kick-off. Just another great move by Payon and Loomis, IMO.

Whether you think you can or think you can't...you're right!

That has to be the reason. Maybe they thought that everyone else on their board would be available via the UDFA route.

And oh yea, Punter IS the least important position on the team, with the possible exception of the long snapper, and thats debatable. I'd rank Kicker higher than Punter, as well as Fullback. Punter is the least drafted postion in the entire NFL. And with the exception of Green Bay in 2003(?), every team that picked one this century had all their picks, and most had extra.
