Owens defends agent

By Cam Inman

CONTRA COSTA TIMES

Wide receiver Terrell Owens came to the defense of his agent Friday despite having missed a deadline to void his contract with the 49ers and become a free agent next week.

"I can assure you that neither my agent nor myself made a mistake like this," Owens said on Sporting News Radio's "James Brown Show." "For people to go out and say my agent made a mistake is utterly ridiculous and insane.

"This is something we've talked about throughout the course of the season and since the season has ended. There are two sides to every story. They're going with the story right now that my agent, David Joseph, didn't file paperwork, in which we did."

Joseph notified the 49ers on Wednesday of Owens' intention to void the remaining three years on his contract, but the deadline had been moved up to Feb. 21 and the league ruled Thursday that Owens remains property of the 49ers through 2006.

Owens said he doesn't envision himself staying with the 49ers and called into question the team's direction. Not even the possible release of quarterback Jeff Garcia -- whom he feuded with last season and criticized last month on his Web site -- is apparently enticing for Owens.

Does anyone else have the feeling that with the lack of attention Meshawn Johnson received around the league , that Owens decided he had better stay put in Frisco or lose some serious money ???

I could see that scenario.
But with the 49ers dumping Garcia, Owens definately gets the ball more and the team doesn\'t have to use their first pick to take a WR.
I wouldn\'t be surprised even now if the Ravens or Eagles tried to pick him up.

It\'s a really strange WR world this offseason with such a deep pool of rookie talent coming in. This fact alone makes it impossible for us to deal the hamstring kid, even if we were so inclined.

Beware an 08 theory

You have to wonder on the rebel receiver tag , have to wonder if too many teams were interested and what the ones that were , were willing to pay ....

Looks like Meshawn will get out of Tampa , but in the end what will it cost him ???

Bucs Optimistic Deal Will Get Done

TAMPA - Though several obstacles need to be cleared, Bucs General Manager Bruce Allen expressed optimism Friday that a swap of receivers that would send Keyshawn Johnson to the Cowboys for Joey Galloway will be completed.
``It can get done,\'\' Allen said. ``Joey had a good conversation with Jon [Gruden], and [Galloway\'s agent] Leigh [Steinberg] and I have never had a problem doing a contract in the past.

``But it depends on a number of factors, a couple of them I won\'t go into. But we have to fit him into our cap is one [problem]. We know we can fit him into our team as a player, but there are some other factors involved.\'\'

Allen and Steinberg discussed those factors Friday, hoping to reach an agreement that will allow the proposed trade to go through before Wednesday, the start of free agency.
