I've said this from day 1, this isn't as simple as "PAY THE MAN"
Tom Condon (agent) put together a deal for Payton Manning and Indy that was so lopsided not only did it GUT the Colts, but they had to restructure Manning's contract this past offseason just to make the damn thing work. If we pay Drew 100 mil, forget about ANY upgrades on Defense and possibly losing some offensive line and skills players to make room to create a full roster. Hate to say it guys but this is about Drew also. If he goes hard-line with Condon's recommendations, we have a choice of signing him and never being able to upgrade our team to championship caliber, or wasting a franchise tag on all this BS. March 5 is MONDAY and I don't see this deal happening before then, so just expect to lose a franchise tag on Drew. We'll lose Nicks or Colston over this...... |

I'm not saying that losing Brees would be a good thing or that it is something that is going to happen, so keep that in mind.
But, if the Saints and Brees were to part ways, I'm confident that SP could "coach up" another QB, because that is one of his specialties. I mean, he convinced Parcels to sign Romo after he went undrafted and gave him the tools to be mentally ready when the call came to take the field for Bledsoe. I'm not saying that Romo is a great QB, but SP did a lot for him to become the QB he is today, and I have no doubts that SP could do it again - maybe Kellen Moore? Brees is a hard guy to replace, maybe even impossible, but the Saints are bigger than one man, and that is something we all should remember. |

After todays restructuring of Smith's contract, I will again mention what I said a few weeks back. The Saints are reworking other contracts behind the scenes in order to keep all three of the key players (DB,MC, CN) and possibly some others as well. I think over the next two days we will begin to see some more news trickle out. Worse case, I could be wrong and as mentioned above the Saints will take a step back. But you know what, I can still die a happy man, I lived to see my Saints win a Super Bowl, my LSU Tigers win a NC and the birth of my granddaughter....Life is good...

I kinda am starting to believe it's a Nicks thing...in fact I am starting to think that the delay here might be intentional, on purpose -- that maybe the agency that represents both Nicks and Brees, is trying to force the Saints to use the TAG on Brees, so they can't tag Nicks, and then they will sign the Brees deal. This frees up NICKS to walk to another team, and get a biiiiig payday.
Think about it objectively -- take all the emotion out of it -- look at it for what it is. The same agency represents both Brees and Nicks. It is in their best interest to see both players get the biggest contract possible: more money. It's NOT the agency's job to make a bunch of concessions to keep each of these two players on the same team under the cap....that's ludicrous....it almost kind of doesn't matter what Loomis offers to Nicks, or Brees, right now Nicks is likely being steered to test the free market, by his agent...and by suddenly the two parties being "far apart" in the Brees talks, suddenly there is this holdup, it conveniently helps Nicks avoid the TAG as well. How interesting. Drew knows he is getting his big payday, whether he's franchise tagged or not. He and Nicks are very close but not THAT close. Brees would much rather see Nicks 2 or 3 times a year at NFL events, and know that his Super Bowl buddy OG got a big huge payday for his few years left in the league; rather than him take a paycut himself to keep Nicks here, or see his buddy do the same for him, to keep Drew a Saint. It just doesn't work that way. |
