We're hiring a 1-year stand-in. I'm pretty sure the Rooney rule doesn't clarify that if your head coach is supended for a year you must interview a minority candidate. Personally I think applying the Rooney rule here is making a mockery of the intention of the rule. Here's an idea I'd be OK with... Have all 32 teams set up at least one interview with a minority candidate regardless of their coaching situation. After all, one of its main benefits is to get minority coaches accustomed to the interview process and it also gives 32 teams better insight and information on minority coaches throughout the league. It may be a bit patronizing, but no more than the original rule itself is. |
