As a minority myself....I don't think this rule is even a good rule in the first place. And this case with the Saints is a perfect example of why. Why would I want to be interviewed by a team just so they can use me as a means to an end. Its an insult IMO and wastes both parties time. If the team already has an idea who they want they should be able to hire that person ASAP without any red tape. Don't get me wrong I love the fact that there is a rule in place to give minority coaches a chance if they are qualified and it was meant well when it was put into place but it needs to be tweaked so those minorities coaches aren't made to give a dog and pony show knowing they wont get the job anyway because the team is just fulfilling obligations. Its very insulting...

No one in the entire country really gives a rat's ass in this situation. I like the intent of the Rooney Rule but it sometimes makes a mockery of itself. For instance, it was obvious that John Fox was going to Denver. That was the man they wanted. Therefore, why bother interviewing anyone else?

The Rooney rule has been walked on all over the place in the NFL. I don't remember if Denver interviewed black folk before hiring John Fox, and what about Seattle?
Most teams are settled on who they wanted before the process begins. Let's face it, the NFL is usually DEAD in March thru the draft. The Saints are the ONLY GIG IN TOWN for opportunist writers and journalist. |

I'm going to send in a resume to be a coach to all 32 NFL teams then sue the NFL for not giving me an interview because I'm Asian.
