I love Drew as much as anybody, but I hope we didn't just shackle our financial flexibility to a QB who will be 39 in the final year of his contract.

$40M in salary and signing bonus. Signing bonus is amortized through the length of the contract, so even if Drew gets all the cash today, the Saints write the bonus money off the salary cap in yearly installments.

CAP HITS...

2012 10.2 million (3m base + 37/5 = 7.2m signing bonus)
2013 17.2 million
2014 18.2 million
2015 26.2 million
2016 27.2 million

Exactly what I'm worried about. We free up some room now, but will be paying a 39 year-old qb a ridiculous amount of money and eating up cap space. I appreciate the all-in move (especially with Brees' last good years), I just don't want to see us handcuff ourselves to a point where we have no room to make necessary moves.

IMO, this means that the draft will become ever more important to this franchise over the next half decade. We will need low-cost producers at other positions.

What team have you been following the last half a decade? The Saints under Loomis and Payton are the KINGS of low-cost, high reward producers, undrafted free agents, low picks, surprises, and guys passed over by other teams. Who the heck are are Pierre Thomas, Marques Colston, Chris Ivory, Jahri Evans, Carl Nicks, Jabari Greer, and Jimmy Freaking Graham???? They're nobodies that THE SAINTS found, and found for dirt CHEAP.

WE GOT THIS. Not worried. Not worried at all!

The cap is projected to explode after 2014 because of the new TV deal.

Doesn't seem that bad, only I'm worried that the cap won't increase as much as was projected earlier, since there have been reports and announcements (f.e. Robert Kraft) that seem to indicate that the cap had already been adjusted in accordance to the looming TV deals in the new CBA, and so the cap won't experience a sudden hike after 2014 as was widely speculated. But, I guess the Saints' FO would know more about it than me...

Still, Brees is probably worth it, and they can always try to restructure towards the end of the contract if both sides are willing.

I'm so happy that this is finally done and that Brees stays a Saint, nevertheless, this ordeal has changed the way I view him - for the worse -although, on the other hand, I totally understand where he was coming from in the negotiations.

Then again, he has never been my favorite Saints' player, and probably never will be, mainly because he doesn't play on the defense.

Late to the party. Probably answered. The signing bonus is spread out over the length of the contract. So the $37 million is spread out at $7.4 million per year. There's $3 in base the first year. So that's $10.4 million. The rest is the other guaranteed dollars which are also spread over the life of the contract.

Drew will never get to the end of this contract. If he's still productive by year 4, it'll be restructured. If not then the Saints and Drew part ways with services rendered. That's why the structure of the contract, which virtually guarantees $55 million to be paid out in the first three year was crucial to get straight.

Super Bowl Championships: New Orleans Saints:1, Carolina:0, Atlanta Chokers: STILL ZERO

Only Atlanta choked in an unchokable situation... Life is definitely good.

And that being said.... It seems... After all..... Drew Brees did something that was good for the team, and the city of New Orleans. The contract is full of salary cap relief, and "outs" for the team..... I would not be completely surprised if a good % of the reason this drug out was to get the contract structuring right... This is one of the most complex structures I have seen, and both parties share the risk for the total price but also have the outs...

I don't think he should ever be doubted again.
