Trust in Spags?
well what do you think now. As for me this was a wake up call, we need so much more help on the D. It can be the coaching to, but we just dont have the players at all

I'll reserve my judgement until after more than one game...

I agree- we do not have the personnel. No pressure, bad tackling, no adjustments. How many times did they run that WR screen on the first drive? Ho many times with the fake short handoff into a rollout? We over-pursued that one 20 times. |
Re: Trust in Spags?
We've been blessed with this "not completely terrible" D now, so we can't ask too much considering the amount of points we put up per week with our O. We have gobs of talent on the D which can't tackle or apparently play within a system too well (note to self: redefine what "gobs of talent" actually means later).
Just as long as our D holds the other team to a number lower than the number we have will do for now at the immediate future. We'll need patience with the current D system, though I still really only trust Joe Pesci. |

Yeah it looked like Kromer had his hands too full to handle his basic job duty...the O-Line!!

ok....how about... Rome wasnt built in a day. Give Spag sometime. I trust our defense will get better in his system. I mean, its not like there was a lack of pressure. There was a poop-ton of pressure. Our d-line was in the backfield almost every pass play. How many times did you see Griffin get drilled right after he threw it? Ill tell you...a lot! Face it, Griffin was just a tough guy to bring down. He got rid of when he needed to, or if he didnt have a reciever, he got away from would-be tacklers. |

You know they said that his d always starts slow. This was his third time he had been dropped a 40-burger on starting a new d. So he starts off slow, ok i will give him that but. damn man, we really don't have a few years to wait.
Our window is only open for a few more years, then its a totally rebuild all over again. Brees will not be our guy for that much longer, we need so so much more help. We have to fix this and now .......... |

Re: Trust in Spags?
Well it didn't look good today. The one thing I will say is in the year the giants won the Super Bowl with Spags as DC, they allowed 80 points in their first 2 games (45 to Dallas, 35 to GB). Now granted both those teams finished 13-3, but I'm willing to give it a little more time before I hit the panic button. Getting some of our starters (especially at corner) healthy and back on the field would definitely help.

Re: Trust in Spags?
I do trust Spags and his scheme... the Saints' defensive players, not so much.
But like the FOX broadcast team said, Spags' Giants started giving up 80 total points in their first two games, but ended up winning the Super Bowl, so I'm not willing give up on either Spags nor the Saints' D players just yet. |
Re: Trust in Spags?
Honestly, I thought our D scheme looked fundamentally good, the problem was the big plays. We were actually tackling people! There were only a couple of bad misses, and nowhere near as bad as under GW. We stopped the run, and forced RG3 to make some pretty risky passes, but our secondary wasn't there to finish the job, and his receivers bailed his a$$ out more than once. When Jabari is back it will help, but we need our backs to take a serious look at themselves and readjust.

Re: Trust in Spags?
In the words of Ray Lewis, if your D gives up 25 points in a game they are NOT DOING THEIR JOB. I think also this was Hassletts homecoming and his D looked good until the 4th quater, the Skins D will only get better, his version of the Dome Patrol. Our D will figure things out in a few games but until then the storms will keep coming. Our O is my concern, we haven't been man-handled like that since St. Louis under Spags., the Niners didn't make us look this bad on the O and their D is much better than the Skins. Keep in mind the Skins went on cruise controll in the 4th so hang on to your hats folks until our O gets it down our D is going to have to get tough enough to keep things close and that may take a while.

Krohmer looked like a deer caught in the headlights, just stood there like a bump on a log and did nothing, didn't even argue the pass interference call in the end zone on Roman Harper. IMO that wasn't even close to pass interference just good coverage. Thanks Mr. Goodhell for stripping us of a chance to win by taking our Head Coach. |
Re: Trust in Spags?

Agreed, but they didn't have great talent at DB either, so there's still hope for the Saints' D. That pass interference call on Harper was ridiculous, and it probably had a very big affect on how the game unfolded. The 'Skins would've had to punt if the pass was called incomplete as it should've, and the Saints could have gone onto make it a 1-score game in the 3rd quarter instead of being put in a situation where the 'Skins could just bound in the ball from the 1 yard line. It was a terrible call, especially when there were so many occasions where the Saints' receivers were impeded from running their routes cleanly with jersey-pulls and whatnots... not one of those being called by the refs. |

Re: Trust in Spags?
One thing I did notice....Niether rookie DTs Hicks or Walker were activated for this game. I really feel they need to be to get pressure. They are the 2 that did get constant pressure up the middle all preseason. Bunkley & Ellis paired together is good for run stoppage but we need PUSH!! Thats what we've always lacked...I really think Hicks would have made at least alittle difference in this game.

Re: Trust in Spags?
There is a long way for us to go to be an elite team. Sean Payton is sorely missed. It is only one game but a whooper of a disappointment.
|
Re: Trust in Spags?
I go to watch it at a sportsbar here in town, defense looked bad, missed tackles, no pressure on RGIII. As bad as it was, at least they had a shot to try & tie at the end of the game. They should be able to look back at this game & correct themselves. 2 big plays that changed the Colstons fumble/touchback & the Harper pi call, if neither happened who knows.
|
Re: Trust in Spags?
First game, that counted. The Skins had a good game plan and our D (our team for that matter) was unable to get into a rhythm. Plus the D is a little thin. I see major adjustments in the next week. We have to go to Carolina and Newton presents alot of the same problems RG3 did.

Well, the 40 burger was not all on the defense. The Harper pass interference call should've been a turn over on downs - 7 points. The 12th man on the 4th down punt - 3 points. Interception thrown by Brees, which put the ball inside the 5 yard line - 7 points. If you take all those mishaps, they combine for 17 points, and without them the Saints' defense would've "only" allowed 23 points... well within that Ray Lewis "margin of excellence." Just saying... |
Re: Trust in Spags?
I sat there looking at the scoreboard all through the game and doing the math, and knowing that every time we scored we'd still have to kick off to the Redskins, and they would dutifully march down the field and score again at will, against our defense. From about the early third quarter on, it was really only ever a question in my mind of whether we would lose by one score or two. Because we couldn't freaking stop them. At all!
Even after the blocked punt, it was like, yay, yippie, but to start the third quarter we still gotta kick off to the Redskins again, so tack on at least another 7 to the score before our offense even sees the field again. I actually felt like we should have tried an "Ambush" in there somewhere, because we desperately needed possessions. And their scoring was almost inevitable and guaranteed, once they had the ball it was only a question of a is it a 3 or a 7. It was that ugly. |

Re: Trust in Spags?
I questioned old bad habits (ie. getting caught out of position and tackling) way back during pre-season. I was then told by several folks that I was a 'chicken little' and there was nothing that they wouldn't fix. Yeah right.
So here we are, Game 1 over- the Skins come into OUR HOUSE, beat us with a rookie QB, pedestrian D, and a third string RB. Same issues on D as the pre-season. Just hope Spags gets it running right before it's too late! |
Re: Trust in Spags?
I trust Spags more than I do our college scouts. Our draft sucks and has for years. Yes, we can find some late round gems. But, how about they find us an early draft pick that works out well.
|
Re: Trust in Spags?
[QUOTE= But, how about they find us an early draft pick that works out well.[/QUOTE]
Patrick Robinson has worked out well. He's getting better still, and almost had a nice pick yesterday. Cameron Jordan was one of the better things going for our run-D yesterday. Mark Ingram is not the second-coming of Emmitt or anything, but he also has shown improvement. Why he didn't get the ball more is a good question. Our first rounders haven't stolen the show like some of our late-rounders, but give the guys some credit, they are far from busts. |
Re: Trust in Spags?
I am gonna reserve judgment on the D for now. Here's why:
1) No one knew what to expect from RGIII and the Redskins offense. No one. They didn't do much of that zone read in the preseason, so there was no way to prepare for it. And they ran it almost exclusively in the first half. Plus there isn't any film on RGIII to study except college. How much good is that gonna do you? It was a tough assignment on our team and our D. We didn't meet the challenge, but secondly: 2) How much time has the D actually had together? Lofton and Hawthorne both were hurt much of the preseason, just came back. Greer has been out all preseason, and still isn't back, and he is our best corner. Patrick can't stay healthy, and he went out. So 1 and 3 CB out, and 2 LBs who haven't done on field work in weeks playing. It's gonna take some time for their health and legs to come back. I say we give it a chance as the weeks go for us to play teams we can actually gameplan for, for guys to get healthy, and for those that didn't play much to get acclimated and see if there is improvement. I feel pretty confident there would have been a different result if we played them week 3 as opposed to week one. Also, the offense wasn't very helpful. Turnovers and three and outs consistently will foil any defensive plan. Except maybe the 2000 Ravens defense. And our D definitely is not that. |
Re: Trust in Spags?

Well, they had to abandon the running game because they were playing catch-up for most of the game. And even more importantly, they sucked at 1st downs and because of that they were forced into 2nd-and-long and 3rd-and-long situations where you rarely call a running play when you have a Drew Brees caliber QB on your team. |

Its Only One Game...I Havent Saw One Team Who Was Dominate From Start To Finish Without A Wakeup Call...Hopefully We Just Got Ours Early...
