I hope and pray...

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I say reach down there in the 5th-7th round prediction range, and draft him in the first. That should shake the whole thing up like a Jinga tower coming down, and he'll probably be awesome also!...

Re: I hope and pray...

You don't think picking Nicks and Morestead (2 pro bowl players and arguably the best at their position in the league respectively) is the definition of late round drafting success? I have no issue with our 2007 onward late drafting just based on those 2 picks. Rounds 5+ generally produce guys who don't end up playing in the league or journeymen players on average. Any "hit" for a pro bowler is a great draft.

But as for the initial topic, with the first round pick we definitely need to hit on an impact player. We have had some successful 1st rounders and some not so successful but are overdue for a top player selection in that round. We could sure you a guy who would define our defense for the next 10 years.

Two out of 16 picks? No, I don't consider that having late round success at all.

10 of those guys aren't even in the league anymore and it ain't looking good for 2 or 3 others.

Really. Not being argumentative, but I consider it successful for sure based on the isolated elite success. Sure you want more depth players and the odd starter but show me another team with two pro bowlers in round 5 or later in the last 5 years. Perhaps it happens more but I would doubt it. Let alone two guys that as I said before are arguably the best at the position in the league.

And why not add the first Payton year 2006 to the mix too and the undrafted rookies. You throw Colston, PT, Ivory, Strief (may not be great but a starter), Evans (another one of the best), Cadet, Bushrod....

I think overall we've been one of the better late round drafting teams in the coach/GM's tenure across the league. And I believe he was a 4th but Jimmy Graham was a hell of a talent evaluation. I have no issue with how this team has utilized it's later round selections. The draft is a crap shoot at best let alone when you start getting into selections 150 players into a draft.

Jordan is emerging as a very good d-end. Jenkins should never have been drafted to play safety either, he was a cornerback and I think that's where he would be most effective.

Graham was a 3rd, and you're including a Punter we gave up two picks for?

I think the last 5 years shows we haven't been that good drafting in the late rounds. Carl Nicks and a punter... out of 16 picks? I'm not impressed at all. I think 2006 is skewing everyone's opinion about our late round success.

Hear ya frustration. For sure we don't want busts. Waste of energy, time, and money.

But guys like Brodrick Bunkley ain't busts.
