Re: SAINTS HIRE RYAN AS DC

The Saints had mixed in some 3-4 looks and appear to have the personnel to make the switch.

2011 first-round pick Cameron Jordan played in a 3-4 defense at Cal and would make a good "5" technique end. Veteran Brodrick Bunkley played nose tackle during his brief stint with the Denver Broncos and could play the nose if the team is unable to re-sign Sedrick Ellis, who is an unrestricted free agent this offseason. 2012 third-round pick Akiem Hicks is 6-foot-5 and 318 pounds and could play multiple spots in a 3-4 front and 2011 third-round pick Martez Wilson has been miscast as a 4-3 defensive end and could benefit by a move to rush linebacker in the new system.

Not all of the current Saints will fit in with the new defense. Veteran defensive end Will Smith is 6-foot-3 and 282 pounds and is better suited to play in a 4-3. Smith will turn 32 before training camp and the move to a 3-4, along with his hefty contract ($10.15 million due in cash, $14.541 million cap number), could hasten his exit from New Orleans.

Ryan had been closely linked to the position, but was not the only candidate. University of Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham interviewed for the position before withdrawing his name from consideration on Friday.

The son of Buddy Ryan, and the twin brother of New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, Rob Ryan has been defensive coordinator with the Oakland Raiders (2004-08), Cleveland Browns (2009-10) and Dallas Cowboys. Under Ryan, the Cowboys ranked 14th in total defense in 2011 and were 19th during a 2012 season where several key players - Jay Ratliff, DeMarcus Ware and Sean Lee - had injury-plagued seasons. Cowboys outside linebacker Anthony Spencer blossomed under Ryan, posting a career-high 11 sacks in 2012. Spencer is an unrestricted free agent and could be an option for the Saints if he hits the open market on March 12.

Re: SAINTS HIRE RYAN AS DC

Good quote from a Cowboys fan regarding the termination of Ryan:

Rob Ryan wasn't the problem. You have 5 injuries to important members of the defense. So why was the Cowboys special team left to have Dez Bryant receiving punts, fumbling onside kicks and being on the receiving end of block punts?
Defense held the Giants to 17 points and Atlanta (scored 23 - 40 points in the weeks prior) to 19 points (4 field goals from 32 - 45 yard line and 1 run TD). Cowboys lost by less than 6 points all season except the Chicago and Seattle games. Romo throws 5 interceptions to Chicago and lets not mention the offense vs. Seattle. Both Washington loses were from offensive turnovers that resulted in interceptions and onside kick TD in the last 3 minutes of the game.
What can you say when Jerry Jones refers to the team as "We" and then all decisions with "I". Where is the accountability for the head coach with his famous quote of "IT'S A PROCESS". Cowboys don't do well in pressure situations (includes and most importantly game winning scoring drive in the last 2 minutes of the game) so why make a hasty decision in firing Rob Ryan just to prove that you are the GM/Owner. We already know that....and look what we have to put up with for the last decade.

I can honestly say I feel bette about Ryan than Spags. I told a Dallas buddy at work that wasa good move for him when they hired Ryan. I still think he done ok for what he had. Aything we get is an improvement and with our offense we're a contender

If Ryan's hair is your biggest concern then we're gonna have a pretty good season coming up.

Who is Stan Kwan and why couldn't he have just replaced McMahon?

Good question. I think McMahon may be a better organizer, film reviewer, X's and O's type coach, but wanted that "teacher" type to help with the fundamentals.

Reminds me of when we signed Fred McAffee. He became a player/coach on our special teams and we got better almost overnight.

Kwan is probably a good teacher.

I don't think we have another run stuffin fat boy on the team. It would be a waste to play Hicks there when I think he could flat dominate at DE in a 3-4.

I think DT just moved up the priority list pretty significantly.
I heard Jamarcus Russell wanted back in the NFL.
