this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Just wondering how/what his role will be to make him more successful in our 3-4 vs. when he was a Jet and struggled with it. Thoughts?...

Re: Vilma in our 3-4 scheme

he struggled in the middle so I expect to seem him outside which should work fairly well. right now i would list him as our best pass coverage LB. It will be interesting to watch after an off season with no major rehab.

Re: Vilma in our 3-4 scheme

The Jets ran a bit different type of a 3-4 back then than what Rob Ryan is going to run in New Orleans now, so I think Vilma will fit into the scheme, just not as an every down LB.

Re: Vilma in our 3-4 scheme

Ryan switches between formations frequently, so Vilma will see the field some I suppose... 3-4, 4-3 personnel "46", and his Psycho 1-5-5 formation

Yep, the WILB in Ryan's 3-4 is nearly identical to the WILL in a 4-3.

Lofton is the one I'm worried about.

Re: Vilma in our 3-4 scheme

Vilma should either play ILB next to Lofton or ride the bench and wait for passing situations to get in coverage. OLB would be an awful fit; he's undersized for the OLB positions. At 230 Vilma would get crushed on running plays and now lacks explosiveness to be a pass rusher. What he does have going for him is the instincts and knowledge of the game.

Vilma best place on the team is coaching our young talent.

He's always played MLB in a 4-3. He hasn't played in a base 3-4 scheme yet, and playing that SILB spot is a lot different than a 4-3 MLB. Its the same thing Vilma tried to do but didn't do well. Vilma did OK, but went from an A-player to a B-player with that same transition. Lofton is only a tad bigger than Vilma, 1 inch shorter but 10 pounds heavier. He'll be taking on OG's a lot more than he did at MLB.

Thank you for that insight!

As of yet no one has mentioned that Rex is probably getting a little feed back about the inside scoop in regards to the Saints running back Chris Ivory.

I was thinking the same thing, but I believe he'll be fine. His true weakness is pass coverage. I see Vilma as a weakside outside linebacker rotating with Martez Wilson, Gallete or Butler being our strong side pass rusher. Lofton and Hawthorne in the middle. I expect a big improvement from Hawthorne. I'm beginng to hope we draft Vacarro, get rid of Harper and move Jenkins to the SS.
