Re: More on Chase Thomas

There's some amazing comments in this thread.

Sure the measurables don't always mean a jot. I am totally on board with that. For anyone who isn't on board go on nfl.com and look at the top 10 performers for each position in the combine for the last 6 seasons. I guarantee the majority of players you will not even recognise!

I'm also quite high on this kid right now. Everything looks good and to pick him up as an Undrafted Free Agent is a real coup. The biggest reason for this is that he will cost hardly anything and is incredibly low risk which leads me to the main point ....

'The scouts of the NFL teams don't know what they are looking at...'

Oh come on. Sure every team makes mistakes and every team finds true gems but to make a carte blanche statement like that is ridiculous. I do not believe for one second that it was that glaringly obvious that an amazing player fell through 7 rounds and all 32 teams. There MUST have been something more than just the measurables that gave reason for this guy to fall through the draft.

I know we all have an opinion and that's what makes this board and sports in general brilliant! But really? We have a saying in England ... 'Everyone's a football manager'. Basically everyone can manage the England National Team better than whoever is managing it!

love the highlight film. I am pulling for him this year, but if anything else he will make our staff better.

Chuck Howly ran a 5.5. Sammy Knight wasn't exactly greased lightning and Vaughn Johnson probably never won a footrace in his life.

Casillas ran 4.50 at combine with the low time of 4.42 - didn't exactly make him a game-changer for the Saints either.

If the 40 time is really the main reason why he went undrafted; I'm over the moon that the Saints were able to sign him as an UDFA.

Re: More on Chase Thomas

If I've got two players and I can't decide which one is better I'm taking the guy with the better physical intangibles. I.E. 40 time, bench press, position drills, all that good stuff, with the hopes that I can develop him into a monster.

Let's talk about Jimmy Graham. He was a horrible player at Miami. I watched him drop 3 straight TD passes (and he still drops passes now). He caught 17 passes, had 200+ yards and 5 TD's that year. That's pedestrian. He was drafted because of his intangibles. He was drafted because he was big; and he was drafted because he ran a 4.5. So for every person that was drafted because they were fast and it didn't work it, it's the same thing the other way around.

Right now, before OTAs or minicamps have begun, I believe both Chase Thomas and Kevin Reddick will make the team.

Reddick is a better "athlete" in terms of measurables, and I think he will make it as a backup in the middle. Chase Thomas doesn't have anything much in the measurables department; but he just makes plays. I would be surprised if he didn't at least make the PS; he might make the 53 as an outside backer.
