Re: Press Man Coverage our Kryptonite

it is not so much a press as getting the push up the middle on drew. thats our soft spot. why do you think carolina draft two DT in the fist two rounds?

teams in the south have been drafting to stop us for years and we have not made any real counter moves. it is catching up to us.

press coverage is not the issue pocket integrity is

That and opposing teams hurry up offense. For some reason it just burns us.

And I was thinking that DLP may be grading out OK, but the grades don't take into account the pressure up the gut forces Brees to step sideways or back instead of forward in the pocket as he's done for so many years.

Its not considered a pressure or a hurry, but it forces Drew off of his comfort spot in the pocket.

My two concerns going in (if anyone recalls)

press coverage on our WRs and DLP.

agreed

now if drew was a 6'4" QB then DLP would work IMO. that and having better corner protection so he could hold his ground in the pocket for another second or two before stepping up would help also.

big difference in a 6' QB stepping up verses a 6'4" QB stepping up. thats almost two yards or two step in a seven step drop.

So i can not hang DLP totally here except on his quickness in picking up stunts.

laws of basic geometry come into play here. DLP can not give up that first step in blocking so easily. dude need more sand in the pants maybe. or his needs more of an initial punch that he has now maybe.

Ryan Griffin is 6' 5"

With a lot of work to do, granted.

Issue #1 can Joe Morgan stay off IR. he does us no good lounging in a whirlpool and riding a bike.

If we are addressing WR help it has to be the need for big tough WR that excels in the middle of the defense and out in the flats. a bigger version of Lance Moore. still waiting on lance to make his impact.

Moore and Colston have both fallen off the map, age + injuries. Colston is SO SLOW these days, it's like those slant routes and buttonhooks that he used to run for easy 10-yard gains are now 3 and 4 yard gains. Not having a true threat at wide receiver is killing us. Whether they are playing zone or man doesn't make a bit of difference. There's a reason why the overwhelming majority of Brees' passes go to the tight ends and running backs.

3 years ago we used Colston, Henderson, Moore, and Meachem. Now we have the same guys with Stills in Henderson's spot. They can't all have dropped off that fast so I agree with the degraded O-Line theory. Our line is no where near as stout as it used ot be. Evans constantly playing hurt is a big part of it. Goodwin was also much better at center.
