Is it time to put TE back on our list of team needs?
I agree with Surfer in that we need to utilize our tight ends better. But I am sick of the sub-par play of Conwell. I imagine he\'s a good leader but he\'s digressing in productivity. I think we should leave Hall in there more often than Conwell. Hall is a nasty blocker, as in he seems to really enjoy pushing people around with a vengence, and he\'s got hands but he\'s just slow. That should balance the offense in being the exact opposite of Stallworth.
I disagree with saying that Mitchell is our future. I\'m not outright saying that he isn\'t. I just think he\'s a big question mark. Has he ever played in a regular season game? Sure he\'s big and fast, but so is Tebucky Jones. What I do love about Mitchell is that he plays special teams very hard, and makes plays. But being a good safety requires smarts, and instincts and his are unproven. |

Mitchell hasnt played much in the regular season aside from special teams,
but he is always around the ball. Tebucky isnt. i think if Mel has learned the position he will do well. if you can find your way to the ball amidst 21 other guys running full speed around you over the course of 100yds, why not when youre only 15 yards away? id like to see him a bit more in a rotation with bellamy and jones. see if the kid can play. |

The TEs production isn\'t the only problem. As Syco accurately addressed above, we misuse our TEs. Our scheme in general is poor. We need to spread the field and hit WRs on deeper routes. Of course, that assumes a QB that can throw the deep ball with touch and WRs that can actually catch it once it gets there. That said, many of our problems come from the scheme\'s poor planning (read coaching).
They seem to want to use the TEs to give AB large targets in the middle of the field 5-10 yards from the line. They also seem to want to have a power running game. Neither of these ideas, IMO, works well for our team. Even with a west coast style offense with lots of quick short patterns, our offense should have defenses on their heals. Our speed needs to be used to make teams play catch up and we need to pass to establish the run. Our current scheme allows defenses to always be running downhill and attacking the line. This is why, IMO, screen plays, draws, inside/short-yardage runs, and plays that take a long time to develop NEVER work for us. If we could use the speed and passing game to get defenses moving backwards, or at least stopping to read before they react forward, then our success on O would improve. That has to do with coaching though. Wrong use of personnel, poor and predictable play calling, unimaginative scheme. |
