Is it time to put TE back on our list of team needs?
The TEs production isn\'t the only problem. As Syco accurately addressed above, we misuse our TEs. Our scheme in general is poor. We need to spread the field and hit WRs on deeper routes. Of course, that assumes a QB that can throw the deep ball with touch and WRs that can actually catch it once it gets there. That said, many of our problems come from the scheme\'s poor planning (read coaching).
They seem to want to use the TEs to give AB large targets in the middle of the field 5-10 yards from the line. They also seem to want to have a power running game. Neither of these ideas, IMO, works well for our team. Even with a west coast style offense with lots of quick short patterns, our offense should have defenses on their heals. Our speed needs to be used to make teams play catch up and we need to pass to establish the run. Our current scheme allows defenses to always be running downhill and attacking the line. This is why, IMO, screen plays, draws, inside/short-yardage runs, and plays that take a long time to develop NEVER work for us. If we could use the speed and passing game to get defenses moving backwards, or at least stopping to read before they react forward, then our success on O would improve. That has to do with coaching though. Wrong use of personnel, poor and predictable play calling, unimaginative scheme. |
