Re: Mock Draft Simulator

Just reading some reports on the mid/late round centres and it seems a really weak spot in the draft. All of them either lack strength or really struggle with speed. Im hoping that the Saints maybe bring Goodwin in for a year and see about developing one of them for a year and if they are not up to it draft the best C next year.

Example report

(C) Gabe Ikard
Just reading up on him now as a mid/late round Centre.
The report is he is on the ground alot and not to strong, also struggles with speed.

Next year early rankings have Hroniss Grasu Oregon and Reese Dismukes Auburn as the best two centres.

STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES

STRENGTHS: Impressive quickness to render opponents ineffective, often peeling off the defensive tackle to take on defenders at the second level when run blocking and easily sliding laterally to handle pass pro duties. Impressive core strength while anchoring. Most impressive, because of his athleticism, Oregon is one of the few teams that asks its center to pull.
WEAKNESSES:

Compares To: Max Unger, C, Seahawks -- like the other former Duck, Grasu relies on athleticism and technique rather than power.

--Rob Rang

PLAYER OVERVIEW

The Los Angeles native was a two-way starter at Crespi High School who was a first-team all-state selection as a sophomore. By the time he was a senior, Grasu was a stalwart on an offensive line paving the way for 1,958 rushing yards.
Like many Oregon recruits, Grasu wasn't highly coveted by all the major programs. A three-star recruit by ESPN.com, Grasu was valued by the Ducks for his athleticism.

After redshirting in 2010, he jumped in as a 14-game starter redshirt freshman. He built his string of consecutive starts to 27 entering the 2013 season after earning first-team Pac-12 honors in 2012. (9/24/13)

Marcus Martin, C, USC i just do not get. great versatility i guess, starter for two years at ROG moved to OC this year and did OK. Pick him as your #1 OC on the board is putting a heck of a lot of trust upside. Because on tape i do not see a #1 OC in the draft. media department at USC strikes again or what? If he can handle the mental game at the NFL level then he is the right pick

Colorado State's Weston Richburg is a phone both technitian. head on a swivel quick feet, good short area mobility and athleticism. The biggest pluses on the kid is Highly intelligent.great intangibles, Biggest knock is strength. sandwiched between two all pro's and some weight training he should be good to go and only get better

Arkansas' Travis Swanson. Best suited for a zone-blocking scheme? dirty player is always a plus in the trenches if he is smart and gets away with it. There in lies the rub. can he handle the mental aspect of the job at the NFL level. never talked to the kid so i can not answer that concern, but at times his play did leave you wondering. Plus he does not seem to play with his head on a swivel as well i would like.

developmental picks

Utah State's Tyler Larsen Ahh a pre season must watch of mine. He did not disappoint. scrappy blue collar mentality that held his own. he loves his pancakes that is for sure. he definitely is among the best at finishing of his blocks at all levels. i actual watched second level defenders pull and flinch when Tyler had them in his sights. truly fun to watch. man-blocking system? maybe but with his mentality i think he is hard to pigeon hole.

Oklahoma's Gabe Ikard i do not get this kid. he may play up to his competition. at times this year he looked like a #1 OC totally ingored by the media much. So focus and comment are my #1 concerns with him. But the skill set is there

North Carolina Russell Bodine Now IMO here is a player that must interview well and should have probably stayed in school. Because if your looking for a player that may develop into a starter but at the very least has an excellent shot at developing into a valuable backup at both OG and OC for years to come, this might just be the guy. He needs some positioning coaching without a doubt. he got exposed this year trying to be the heart and soul of the interior line. But as a Jr i have to ask learning experience or serious limitations. i am going with a wake up call

As you can see i like interior OL that are blue collar and have a nasty edge to there game. Spiting on a defenders hand is cool in my book, aka Conrad Dobler mentality. ;)

But they have to smart and play with their heads on swivel in order to pick up the complex stunts and blitzes that will have thrown at them at the NFL level.

no matter who you draft you will need a safety blanket IMO in the presence of a veteran mentor to back them up and coach-em.

Bit early for Grant as there will be better players still on the board in my view.Id rather wait and look at Devin Street,Kevin Norwood or Mike Davis around rounds 4-6.

Andrew Jackson is really interesting,as long as the offfield issue(not sure what it was) are not a issue he is a underlooked talent on paper.

Another interesting one if the team could get his head straight is

Roland Powell

OVERVIEW
2013: Played in 11 games and started in eight. 2012: Tore his left ACL two different times. First ACL tear came in spring game, and then second came during rehab. 2011: Played and started in 12 games. 2010: Played in 13 games and made one start. High school: Was No. 1-rated defensive end recruit (Rivals).

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS Looks the part -- well-proportioned, athletic, muscular build. Natural bender. Terrific agility. Can stunt and loop. Closes fast. Flashes strong hands and power potential. Loose hips to zone drop. Was deployed as a stand-up linebacker and hand-in-the-dirt rush end. Has untapped potential.
WEAKNESSES
Inconsistent get-off. Average eyes and instincts -- has to see it before he triggers. Shoddy edge setter. Plays short-armed, gets locked up and allows linemen to capture his outside shoulder. Aimless, unrefined pass rusher. Intensity and urgency leave something to be desired. Has coasted on natural talent. Had his tires pumped since high school -- entitlement was an issue as a young player and his personality could rub some people the wrong way. Injury history.
DRAFT PROJECTION Rounds 3-4

BOTTOM LINE
Powell is a physically gifted, inconsistent, college “Buck” (hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker) with crude strength and athleticism. Has developmental value as a stand-up rush linebacker, but must dedicate himself to the craft and realize he’s no longer the big man on campus.

Ron Powell*, OLB, Florida
Height: 6-3. Weight: 237.
40 Time: 4.65.
Projected Round (2014): 4-6.
4/12/14: Powell started the 2013 season strongly and recorded two sacks against Miami. He got banged up and barely played against Arkansas and LSU. Powell finished the season playing solid football and entered the 2014 NFL Draft rather than taking another injury risk. He notched 26 tackles with seven tackles for a loss and four sacks, but his collegiate career fell far short of expectations. Powell was lighter than expected at the Combine, but he ran well.

8/14/13: Powell was out for the 2012 season after a setback during rehab for his knee injury. The Gators are optimistic that he is in store for a big season in 2013. They are projecting Powell to be a starter, and he has been on the practice field without restrictions in training camp. The redshirt junior has the physical talent to be a first-round pick.

Powell was the No. 1 recruit in the nation in 2010. He had a rough start as a freshman, recording just 25 tackles with 2.5 tackles for a loss and a sack.

Powell was moved was moved to hybrid defensive end and outside linebacker for 2011 in Will Muschamp's defense. The 'Buck' linebacker produced some quality prospects like Sergio Kindle and Brian Orakpo for Muschamp when he ran the defense at Texas. Powell finished his second season with 32 tackles, nine tackles for a loss, six sacks and a forced fumble.

Late in 2011, it seemed like the light bulb finally turned on as Powell showed some of the excellent speed and play-making ability that made him such a sought after recruit. He recorded four sacks in the final six games and was consistently pressuring the quarterback.

There was a lot of excitement for Powell heading into 2012, but the junior tore a knee ligament in spring practice (and received a medical redshirt). Powell may be better off staying for his senior season in 2014 and continue to improve before going pro. However, there have been reports out of Gainesville that suggest Powell could explode this year

On the Clock Premium: Fanspeak's NFL Mock Draft Simulator

No Good Offers on Trades, So Stood Pat...

Round 1 (27) Jerimiah Attaochu, OLB, Ga Tech; Height: 6’ 3”; Weight: 252 lbs.

Rare Athlete with Rare Speed/Size Combination; Elite pass rusher with history of production and film revealing an even higher ceiling; Great attitude and person who showed trust in coaching at Senior Bowl by playing at all linebacker positions (+Versatility) and at defensive end; Nigerian immigrant with appreciation for his opportunity and fierce competitor; Can start for the Saints immediately as an upgrade at SAM; injured at Senior Bowl, didn't participate in drills at Combine but, still recovering, had an impressive Ga Tech Pro Day; First round pick for all these reasons and because he's a three down linebacker...

Round 2 (58) Donte Moncrief, WR, Ole Miss; Height: 6’ 2”; Weight 221 lbs.

Taller Wide Receiver with Big, Thick Physical Frame; Best Route Runner in the draft; Despite questions about straight line speed, ran a 4.4 at Combine; Sudden, Quick change of direction in running routes gaining a significant advantage; Good Hands with large catch radius, though he does allow some balls to his body; Still productive against elite cornerbacks in the SEC despite limited supporting cast at Ole Miss; Rare availability because of deep wide receiver class; if either Clemson's other kid, Martavis Bryant, or Vandy's Jordan Matthews is available here, we will would be happy with either of the three...

Round 3 (91) Jordan Tripp, ILB, Montana; Height: 6’ 3”; Weight 240 lbs.

Touted as an outside linebacker; would be a great complement to current Saints scheme as an Inside LineBacker as Tripp displayed top end speed, quickness in coverage and in space in both Combine Drills and at Senior Bowl; history, production of stopping running back cut-back lanes as well as sideline-sideline pursuit; another unique ability is covering lesser wide receivers on intermediary routes; could upgrade either of the Inside Linebacker spots for the Saints now which is the only glaring need of upgrade on defense; Touts his versatility in interviews because he really is a 3 down linebacker...

Round 4 (122) Walt Aikens, CB, Liberty; Height: 6’ 1”; Weight: 205 lbs.

Size is inline with transition to NFL move for more physical corners with long arms as a plus; first thing that jumps out is scouts' comparison to Saints' Keenan Lewis; Red Flag - started career at Illinois and pulled a bone-head theft stunt; transferred to Liberty to get priorities correct; despite adequate timed measurables (ran a 40 at 4.49 at ProDay) has second gear; displayed play-making creativity at Illinois as a freshman safety and continued at the Senior Bowl; The Football GamePlan CEO that posts here really had a great, genuine interview with Aikens at Senior Bowl (you really need to see it via youtube)...

Round 5 (167) Russell Bodine, OL, UNC; Height: 6’ 3”; Weight: 310 lbs.

Strong, real strong; Versatile, can play Guard and Center at high level; in fact, while I like Weston Richburg of Colorado State, can't see spending a high pick like that when there's not much drop-off to Bodine or Larsen (who's got a brother in the NFL); but Bodine being versatile is a key to depth on the Saints 53 man roster and penchant for only keeping a couple of offensive linemen for depth; Great Knee Bend; Despite "squatty frame" has very quick feet; always seems to recover against bull rushers despite initial "skating" and able to thrown back defenders; plays with a bit of a nasty streak to his game...

Round 5 (169) Howard Jones, OLB, Shepherd; Height: 6’ 2”; Weight: 235 lbs.

They finally added my Deep, Deep, Small School, Dark Horse Candidate to the FanSpeak dBase - Hoorah! A Combine Invite, Jones did not disappoint; his play has resulted in the first ever Pro Day for his school, which the Saints were one of seven (7) teams present; despite interests from larger schools in the area Virginia, Virginia Tech he had to get his grades right and so that's why he's playing at a small school; with his athleticism can be an immediate special teams contributor and with a season, season and half of development should be a starter and with his frame/size will have versatility of a 34 OLB or Ryan's 335 ILB/OLB...

Round 6 (186) Justin Britt, OT, Missouri; Height: 6’ 6”; Weight: 325 lbs.

Britt has the NFL prototypical size, measurables; though often over-looked because of Mizzou's defensive candidates; expect Brittt to develop, contribute quickly as a right tackle; went up against 2014 Draft Prospects Kony Ealy and Michael Sam, but he also faced 2013 first round pick Sheldon Richardson - so he's faced talented linemen during all those weeks of practice as well as the SEC's finest; only issue with his game is second level blocking, which he could develop behind Zach Strief (and possibly be better)...
