By burn the play book. Most plays are built off of a slew of basic plays....

However, the basic plays are tailored by Sean Payton to fit two things. The players/personnel package that will execute, and what the play looks like pre-snap. Both need to change.

We probably run a dozen or so plays out of the same pre-snap formation, those presnap formations need to change and we need fewer personnel packages.

If I whip out wire cutters, wire strippers, and a couple of wire nuts; you have a good chance of guessing what I am about to do.....

If I take out duct tape, vice grips, and WD-40; I could conquer the world or adjust a bicycle chain.

McMahon has to go.
Jenkins has to go.
Smith has to go.
These three alone would make me happy.

QB-Restructure Brees - can not be done this year unless some one wants to shell millions and i means of dollars up front. plus i think there is something in collect bargain against it.

But i think he can get a totally new contract. i think Brady and the Pats did it. Maybe that is why there is a rule against it. have to do some reading on that one

Re: The Big 2014 Changes thread (Non Draft)

Maybe we need some nickel and dime changes instead of big ones
Collins? he is cheap, why replace him?
cut McCown, promote RG1 and save almost a million
restructure our 3.3 million dollar punter, our $5 mill DT, Bresus, and a few others. Loomis is a master of the New Deal.

We were ONE play from hosting the NFCG...do we really need sweeping changes?

I didn't read any of the replies so I wouldn't be influenced by a bunch of logic and stuff.

There was a youth movement on Defense and you see how that panned out.
We had a youth movement because we had some great young talent. That's the only way that works.

Play Book
Our offensive playbook need to be burnt, ashes folded into a nice custard, consumed, and then burn the waste. It is no longer needed, our entire team knows it by heart because it is what we have used for years, defenses know it by heart also. It doesn't work any more and everyone from the newest fan, to expert talking heads, to Sean Payton him self said we need to be less predictable... If you want to be less predictable, do something different.
The play book is fine. It's the play calling that needs to be looked at. And all the player packages have gotten out of control. Remember when people used to talk about our high paced offense? What ever happened to that?

Special teams
Greg McMahon - Needs to go.. He is not covering the fundamentals.
- Unprepared for at least 1 onsides kick (unacceptable)
- Laces in for a playoff FG kick (unacceptable)
- 2nd last in KO return yards and 4th last in PR yards, this directly translated to starting field position for our offense.
2013 NFL Team Returning Stats - National Football League - ESPNAmen!!

Running Backs
Sproles - Time to Find or allow a replacement. Championship teams know when to hold-em and when to fold-em. I love Sproles but he is no longer as elusive, he allowed two punts to roll back to within the 5 yard line that I saw, and he gets tripped by index fingers and tall grass. Couldn't disagree more. I saw a tough quick and smart veteran who was effective in phases. Well except for punt returns. I don't think that was all on him though.

PT - I am on the fence about PT. Another that I love but love doesn't bring Championships. 2013 saw him tied for the most rushing attempts in his career (he had 147 in 2009 also), but his YPC has dropped nearly a yard and until this year has never been less than 4 YPC. His receptions were at an all time high but his YPC was at an all time low and he is not a receiver. All of our RBs suffered from the poor play of the O Line for most of the season. Thomas had a very good year.

Jed Collins - We need more of a hybrid or more of a bruiser. He did a pretty good job this year. It would be nice to find somebody who was more of a threat with the ball in his hands but I wouldn't want it at the cost of a less effective lead blocker.

Travaris Cadet - Does nothing. Wasted spot and we do not need a 5th RB.
Hard to argue with you on this one. Although I do think he's a good back.

Dead Weight
Will Smith - Eat the dead money.
Victor Butler - No idea about him, keep and hope or find someone we know? Let's see what he's got.

Free Agents we let walk
Jenkins - Bye
Vilma - So long
Strief - Bye Unless he wants big money I think it would be a mistake to let him walk.
DLP - Bye Gotta find somebody better first.
Charles Brown - Bye Bring him back on the cheap and let him compete for a roster spot. He had some good games this year.
Meachem - Slow I like Meech but yeah.
Jed Collins - Sort of borderline on him
Haralson - Second season ending injury in 3 years Yeah too bad. He's a good man to have on the edge.

Unlike others I have looked at the financials also, dead money figured into savings.

Smith - saves us 11M

I am sure we can find 1 RB to replace these two for less than 6.4M.
Sproles - Saves us 3.5M Yikes!
P Thomas - 2.9M Leave Britney aloonnne! I mean Pierre!

Lance Moore - 2.8m (I love Lance as well but for that we can find younger = talent)Sad but true.
Nick Toon 400k I'm not ready to give up on him yet.

All I can think of right now. I focused mainly on offense because it seems that is where we find our selves wearing our favorite shoes and not getting into the dance.

Overall we have netted 21M to replace these players with.
Not trying to be contrary or anything. I guess the only three points I strongly disagree with you on are PT, Sproles and Streif.

Youth and talent = recipe for greatness and the ultimate prize. I got a feeling this off season Loomis is going to go Ozzie Newsome on us (lot of new faces on both sides of the ball).

Re: The Big 2014 Changes thread (Non Draft)

I'm not going to mention any teams by name.

If you want speed like their defense we have to get younger, and faster if you want receivers that can get separation from their speed on defense.... We have to get younger and faster.

That involves doing things... Things we do not necessarily want to do.

Football is a sport of short longevity, if we want the Darren Sproles, PIerre Thomas, Marques Colston of tomorrow..... We have to let go of the ones we have today to make room.

In 2008, 2009 and 2010 we developed a lot of receivers on the field. In 2012 and 2013 we threw to Jimmy.

Buy Kromer a mansion, a couple of O-linemen and three or four restaurants! Get him back whatever it costs!
