Meh...

Let Mine-hahah have it. The NFL will keep coming back, because it's the best place for the game. The Dome is more than functional. What a colossal waste of money building a new stadium would be.

Agreed and the new wider concourses are great. I would like to see something done about the Saints HOF and the team store but all in all the Dome is better than ever. I have only been to two other NFL venues, Soldier Field (which looks like a retarded space ship landed in the Pantheon) and the Land hark stadium (or what ever the hell Miami call that dump nowadays). None of those stadium could hold the Dome's jockstrap.
But that artists rendering is great and that will always wooo people.

Re: Stadium Poll

I voted no not yet but its getting close to time to start thinking about it though maybe another 5-10 years and when that time comes I think we need a retractable dome IMHO that would be nice I think we should take advantage of this Louisiana heat and humidity .

We need to start planning for it cause it will happen eventually. I think a ticket price bump with the stipulation that it goes for strictly stadium rebuild is justifiable . I do not like the idea that a straight up majority tax payer funded stadium that is something that I don't like. I hate it when the owners/nfl holds a state hostage for building a stadium or they threaten to move the team elsewhere.

Re: Stadium Poll

The Dome should be fine for at least another 30 years, then with another renovation good for 30 after that. I never really got the idea of tearing down or abandoning perfectly good stadiums. But, if the Saints ever decide they NEED a new crib, then let the Benson family completely fund it.

Yes the draw is the city itself but a state of the art facility would be a draw and get us more future SB bids. I feel like a state of the art dome paired with the city itself would put us in the running for the Super Bowl just about every year which would offset some of the costs over time. Leave the exterior alone except for the roof.
This is a good post and I like the discussion, even though I don't wholly agree with you Dude -- I think the Dome still rocks and has some life in her yet.

But I just wanted to point out to the group, in this discussion, I am pretty sure that it's been talked about before; but from what I've heard, I believe it's impossible to renovate the current Dome with a retractable roof, because of the way it's designed, and the weight, the shape and load bearing of the sides or walls....it couldn't be done with the structure that's there....I think I heard this years ago from one of the old architects at Curtis & Davis. From what I understand, it would have to basically be a whole new structure (whole new sides and walls) on the same site, if you wanted to do a retractable roof. It's an engineering thing.

What would be pretty cool is if they would build a new dome on the same spot with al the modern hoopla and a retractable roof that still looks like the old dome.

Domes do not have retractable roofs, those are stadiums, a dome doesn't leave you with a place for the roof to retract to, unless it functions like a camera shutter and that would be expensive as hell, along with being an architectural feat to make it withstand hurricanes. To put what ever it would be anywhere but where the Dome is now doesn't make any sense, but to tear down and rebuild means the Saints would have to play somewhere else for a few seasons.

Jerry World took about 4 years from ground breaking to opening and i have yet to see Louisiana do anything on time, under budget..

If you look closely that cad drawing or model has a suspended center and no place for the panels to go if they did separate and rotate away.

Now, look at the angles and shape, where do you think what would have finally rested after Katrina?

Re: Stadium Poll

New Orleans learned a valuable lesson in defeat on Tuesday. It's not about the bid -- at least not when there's a new stadium in the mix.

By all accounts, Minneapolis' bid fell well short in almost every way from the ones presented by New Orleans and Indianapolis. It wasn't as financially rewarding or creatively ambitious. And it mattered not.

Few can play Monday morning quarterback better than colleague Peter King of Sports Illustrated. He made an excellent point this week about the NFL's decision. Why couldn't the NFL have just awarded the 2018 Super Bowl to New Orleans and the 2019 game to Minneapolis.
