Is Saints GM Mickey Loomis on the Hot Seat?

The article raises an interesting point. I think Loomis is good at about everything except drafting defensive talent. Maybe its the coaches faults for not developing them, but whatever the case it needs to be fixed quickly.

Re: Mickey Loomis on the hot seat?

Re: Mickey Loomis on the hot seat?

I think Loomis only does one thing well; dealing with the cap. Every year he pulls some amazing things off with the cap.

However, Loomis' ability to draft talent is non-existent. He got lucky with a few small school guys many years ago, but since then he has failed to bring new talent in particularly on the defensive side.

His job should be on the line as much as Rob Ryan's.

Re: Mickey Loomis on the hot seat?

Loomis isn't directly responsible for our draft failures, but he's accountable.

I expect the real problem will be addressed this off-season.

A key member of the Saints’ player personnel department since 2004, Rick Reiprish has been an integral part of the club’s scouting efforts since arriving in New Orleans. He brings over three decades of experience to his position.

As the club’s Director of College Scouting, his responsibilities include coordinating the efforts of the team’s area scouts, working to build a consensus entering the draft and grading and scouting college players throughout the year. Reiprish’s insight has been essential to the Saints’ success during the NFL Draft since his arrival.

And...
Player Personnel
Ryan Pace Director of Player Personnel
Rick Reiprish Director of College Scouting
Terry Fontenot Director of Pro Scouting
Michael Parenton Pro Scout
Ryan Powell Pro Scout
Dwaune Jones Regional Scout
Josh Lucas Regional Scout
Brian Adams Area Scout
Mike Baugh Area Scout
Ryan Hollern Area Scout
Joey Vitt, Jr. Area Scout
Terry Wooden Area Scout
Casey Talley Combine Scout
Paul Zimmer College Scouting Coordinator
Joey Laine Salary Cap Analyst/Player Personnel

Re: Mickey Loomis on the hot seat?

Loomis is on record as saying I do not football players and their skill sets. this all came about with the wire taping issues years back. he said he is the last person to spy on anyone on the field because he knows little about what is going on out there.

no some of the contracts he has just made he may have a time explaining.

but when it comes to pulling a wabbit out of the hat he is one of the best in the NFL, one more year and the cap numbers can really be addressed. dead money will decrease big time. two years and he is sitting good.

just stop giving out the huge contracts please.

Yep, Loomis is basically a very good CEO/CFO. Thats what GM's do in the NFL now.

He's one of the best in the NFL but has his flaws. As you said, he over-pays too much, and the scouting department requires some serious attention this off-season.

After this season no one's job should be safe, no one's.

Re: Mickey Loomis on the hot seat?

Rookies and drafties, are a tougher call.
Lots of college talent falls flat in translation to the NFL.
FA's have film and results, successes and failures at this level.
No excuse when we get those wrong.
All said, Loomis is just one vote.
Payton, Carmichael, Ryan, Pace, Reiprish all have to raise their hands.
And thats after the scouts have recommended the guy or brought him up for a vote.
Our money is funny lately. Success does that to a team.
We tried to win cheap for a longgggggggggggg time. Didn't work very well.
Loomis' job is fine. 11 heads are still better than one when evaluating talent.
We have to finds guys that fit well what we/they (Payton and company) are trying to do.
And get better at doing what fits or level of talent.
ie: Don't press with with guys that are slow, and can't turn and go. Play zone.
If we can't run the ball, forget about play action...not fooling or freezing anybody.
Somethings in the water this season. I still can't put my finger on it.

Re: Mickey Loomis on the hot seat?

I'm tired of our team bringing in all these "project" players

Like, yeah let's bring this player in because he COULD be decent in about 4 seasons time

Bring in a player that knows football, that can compete straight away
