Haslett to return after strong finish
Benson, GM Loomis encouraged, negotiating extension for Saints' coach
Saturday, January 08, 2005
By Jeff Duncan
Staff writer
Jim Haslett is returning for a sixth season as the Saints' head coach and perhaps longer.

Haslett was given assurance by owner Tom Benson that he'll return next season during a meeting with Benson and General Manager Mickey Loomis in West Palm Beach, Fla., Loomis said Friday night.

Haslett also is in the process of negotiating a two-year contract extension for himself and his coaching staff, two team sources said. The deals could be finalized as early as next week

I\'m stunned.
OK, I came to grips with Haslet staying, because if he surrounded himself with better assistants this team could win despite Haz. So if Venturi and McCarthy were replaced it gave me a sliver of hope.

At 1st, I heard no mention of our assistants staying, only Haz.

Is it true Venturi/McCarthy are returning?

Please say it aint so, please :weepy: .

Oh jeez, I\'m gonna throw up.

Didn\'t Benson learn his lesson with Brooks? Don\'t extend Haslett\'s contract until he makes the playoffs... even then, they better play much better ball with far greater consistency for me to think the guy deserves even the minimum of consideration.

Sorry to say Danno, the joke gets sicker. Haslett was quoted as saying he was not gonna replace anyone in his staff in the Mike Shepperd article I posted, first line. And everyone thought I was out of my mind to say we should tank the season at 4-8 and ENSURE change. Here we go again.

Hmmm, I\'m not too sure about this one. I\'ve heard some different things. Check this out, you guys should be on the ball with this.

From Pete Prisco at CBS Sportsline: The Jim Haslett situation in New Orleans could come to a conclusion in the next couple of days. Haslett was scheduled to fly to meet with owner Tom Benson on Friday in West Palm Beach, Fla., where Benson is vacationing. Haslett has two years left on his contract, and rallying the team to four consecutive victories down the stretch might be enough to save his job. Benson owes him $6.5 million for the next two years, so firing him would be an expensive proposition. After the Saints beat the Panthers last Sunday, Haslett made it known he wanted changes if he was to return. That could mean the re-assignment of general manager Mickey Loomis since the two have a tense relationship. Loomis could go to more to the business side of things. In that scenario, the Saints could go outside and hire a personnel director with more of a football background. Keep an eye on this one. It could get interesting shortly.
Clcik here for the source.

I believe it was said previously Halo by another member, but if Haslett believes Venturi and McCarthy should stay, I hope Benson insists he gets rid of them to the point he decides to quit. Although with the pride Haslett has, I doubt he will quit and will force Benson to either accept it, or fire him. Like it says, should be interesting.

Its not Haslett why Venturi is on the staff its Benson! Venturi was promised to always have a job if he would be interm coach when Ditka was here.
