(Lance) Lewis, 6-2, 207, comes to New Orleans after spending the entire 2014 campaign on the practice squad of the San Francisco 49ers. Originally signed by the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent out of East Carolina in 2012, Lewis appeared in three games for the Redskins in 2013 after starting the season on their practice squad and was also on the Dallas Cowboys practice roster for Week 17 of that campaign.

The Concord, N.C. native played two seasons at East Carolina and following his senior campaign, ranked first in school record books in touchdown receptions (22), third in receptions (149) and fifth in receiving yardage (1,716).

These are usually the little signings that surprise (i.e. Lance Moore); good size, look forward to seeing what he can do...

Hmm...well our new WR Coach (John Morton) spent the last several years with the 49ers so maybe he has some insight on Lewis ?

Camp body to push Toon, Coleman or Jones, no?

Edit: I read a report from Mike Detillier yesterday ... "WR. Seatavius Jones has spent a lot of time in weightroom, bigger, quicker off snap and he has another gear in space".

Good sign ;).

FS (3) Jairus Byrd, Rafael Bush, Pierre Warren, Kenny Phillips (FA)

SS (2) Kenny Vaccaro, Rafael Bush, Vinnie Sunseri, Jamarca Sanford

Rafael Bush is to my knowledge is the only safety on the roster that can play both spots and get the job done at a decent level

so this could be a fun camp battle

Pierre Warren, Kenny Phillips (FA)
Vinnie Sunseri, Jamarca Sanford

2 might not make it with the draft pick of Damian Swann who is a solid last ditch option at Safety if all else fails.

#1 fear Pierre Warren will get cut again

[/B]

See us keeping five (5) cornerbacks and five (5) safeties; wild card situation could be if Swann moves to safety, then I could see keeping another cb-type...

But Sunseri surprised and Pierre Warren has shown production when he's gotten to the field...

Bush could be great trade bait, but considering recent injuries, it'd be wiser to keep him under contract - unless the trade was that good...

And then if Phillips surprises with good play, health - Dennis Allen and Rob are going to really feel the heat to get it right...

These three guys will be intriguing for me & I'm specifically curious to see if Phillips is in football shape (DNP in 2014), ready to compete with the younger guys.

Sunseri and Phillips both had injuries, so how they have recovered is a big factor...

Everyone here on the site seems to think Phillips is a SS; he's always played FS...

And there's also where Swann ends up as well as Stanley Jean Baptiste, the second round wonder...

Camp Battles

McCown v Griffin

Toon/Joe Morgan v Coleman/Jones

Peat v Apple Cart (If he comes in and blows everyone away, causing reshuffle of the offensive line)

Foster (knee) v Eulls

Parys Haralson (father time) v Ronald Powell (Spencer starting was a foregone conclusion for Ryan)

Anthony v Hawthorne

Hawthorne v Franklin (Hawthorne loses to Anthony and Franklin shows capable, cap number becomes issue)

Ellerbe (hip) v Humber

Humber v Coley (Humber could find himself in same situation described for Hawthorne)

The defensive backfield gets complicated, key factors:

Raphael Bush is auditioning at the nickel back role to expand his assessment...

Kyle Wilson will have to prove he's more than a nickel-back...

P J Williams isn't a flop, but should make the team, if he earns the nickel, Wilson is gone...

Swann was also scouted to play safety, so he needs to get healthy and show some versatility...

Pierre Warren seems to be the only guy to make plays into interceptions; why are the coaches less impressed than fans?!?

If all are playing well when we're hitting with pads, do we trade a player? with what team and position or draft pick?

Looking at the wide receiver situation...

Given that it's only OTAs so far...

Coleman and Jones have "dazzled" in hats and shorts...

Kyle Prater is one big dude with some amazing hands...

Two questions, first would we keep five (5) or six (6) wide receivers? second, how'd you rank them going into camp?

Re: 2015 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook

247 Sports with CBS Sports.com: New Orleans Saints OTA’s: 3 Early Risers

by Rahul Lanka

I know, I know, it’s just practice, and non-contact as well. However, practice is where players make themselves known, especially ones fighting for playing time on the field. The players who have shined over the past 2 weeks at OTAs are players at positions of needed depth, so the team has to be excited with what they see.

Brandon Coleman, WR

The 6-foot-6 wide receiver has been flying high during practices. Coleman has been getting some time with the first-team and has made some big-time plays. Beating Keenan Lewis, blazing by Kenny Vaccaro, and out-maneuvering Kyle Wilson are all feats Coleman has pulled off during the opportunities he’s been given...

Stephone Anthony, LB

First-round LB Stephone Anthony has been having himself a productive couple of weeks. Anthony has been practicing at the Mike position and has been showing off his athleticism, impressing with his speed, size, and strength...These skills plus his performance thus far has caused some bystanders to comment that he is among the top defensive performers so far. His coverage ability is one the Saints need at the LB position, and Sean Payton has praise for the rookie as well:

“I think he (Anthony) has good instincts,” said Payton.

Delvin Breaux, CB

Delvin Breaux is a homegrown product that has...shown some promise...(with) Browner sidelined...Wednesday, Breaux had the opportunity to practice with the first-team defense, and he...intercepted Brees once and broke up multiple passes...“He’s picked things up. He’s handed it pretty well. He’s in real good shape,” said head coach Sean Payton on Breaux’s play Wednesday.

Next Few Months Critical For Saints CB Stanley Jean-Baptiste

I'd rank our cornerbacks as this:

CB Keenan Lewis
CB Brandon Browner
CB Delvin Breaux
CB P.J. Williams
CB Kyle Wilson
CB Brian Dixon
CB Stanley Jean-Baptiste
CB Terrence Frederick
CB A.J. Davis
CB Damian Swann

Likely carrying five (5) cornerbacks, maybe six (6)...

I'd update my ranking of our cornerbacks as this:

CB Keenan Lewis
CB Brandon Browner
CB Delvin Breaux
CB P.J. Williams
CB Brian Dixon
CB Damian Swann
*****************
CB Kyle Wilson
CB Terrence Frederick
CB Stanley Jean-Baptiste
CB A.J. Davis

Again, likely carrying five (5) cornerbacks, maybe six (6) if say Swann is viewed as tweener (CB/S/NB type)...

SJB is in trouble...He may have to head to the CFL, gets some reps, and come back in a year or two...

Defensive Line seems to be the biggest concern right now with both depth and injuries...

Hicks injury is said to be not that serious...

Bunkley injury/age is worrisome, he's is invaluable, albeit expensive depth...

Need Foster back, healthy, and at the level he had been playing or he could be cut...

Frontline should be Cam Jordan, John Jenkins, Akiem Hicks...

Probably keep seven (7) defensive linemen; injuries look like they'll linger into training camp...

If Kevin Williams rounds into shape, the Saints will keep him, but at his age?!?

Won't know what we have in any of the rookies till the hitting starts...

This will be the big puzzle for the 2015 team...

Well, we still have a training camp to geaux through...

But, yeah, looking like we found a solid third corner in Del Breaux!

Take our time and develop the two rookies in Williams and Swann...

Maybe Dixon can make a case for a sixth cornerback as he deserves...

And it isn't a full hate-on for SJB as he's just a kid wanting to be in the NFL...

In somuch as the colossal blunder of his assessment and second rd selection...

But he better realize that sh*t is real now and he better get it in gear...

Right now or by the end of camp?

I'm with Hagan on this theory of not admitting a draft mistake and keeping him. And I'm willing to throw 2014 out the window.

And what did you find "impressive" about him? The fact that he was close to the receiver while his head was always turned the wrong direction?
:p

Dixon? Sure he was an undrafted rookie that got burned, and he's got some technique issues to refine...

Refine, not learn. SJB still doesn't appear to know the position and he's got training camp to learn CB?!?

Don't dispute SJB will have a "default" advantage as a Round 2 pick with great reluctance to cut ties and issue a mea culpa...

Look, we'll keep five (5) corners, max; crunch the numbers, considering past health issues at safety, we keep five (5) corners...

Think all will agree that as of right now, Lewis, Browner and now, Breaux look like our top three corners...

Barring anymore OTF BS, remaining candidate pool includes PJ Williams, Dixon, Jean-Baptiste, Swann (R), Frederick and Davis...

P J Williams is the probably odds-on favorite rookie we keep, so that leaves one (1) more spot...

And it'll come down to Dixon, Jean-Baptiste or the other rookie Swann...

Now Swann could be a wild card as he can also play some safety; Byrd/Bush and Vaccaro/Sunseri; so Swann could be up against Warren...

But Warren is also the only guy that has shown a propensity to intercept the ball, so...

So because of Swann's flexibility, which could be enhanced with special teams; he's likely your guy...

And if Warren gets pushed out, that leaves Dixon and SJB...

And we have Dennis Allen now to help make that decision...

Re: 2015 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook

I think it's time to ditch looking at our roster as a base 3-4 defense. Our base defense is a 4-2-5. Our starters right now would look like this:

LDE: Cameron Jordan
DT: Broderick Bunkley
DT: Kevin Williams
RDE: Anthony Spencer

SLB: Stephone Anthony
WLB: Dannell Ellerbe

LCB: Keenan Lewis
NCB: Delvin Breaux
RCB: Brandon Browner

FS: Jairus Byrd
SS: Kenny Vaccaro

Re: 2015 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook

With Galette in the lineup, yes, I'd agree with that assessment...

But Spencer is more of a 34 OLB than Galette...

In these past OTAs, Spencer was playing ahead of Galette in 1st and 2nd downs...

Based on the personnel drafted, I'd say we're finally moving to more of a 34 base...

And in the nickel, we've played a third safety, Raphael Bush, more than a third corner...

We're playing more nickel because we're seeing more pass plays and we haven't had the pass rushers that we'll have going into this season...

Now the roster is starting to have the personnel to support a true 3-4 base...

And Hicks probably still will be starting over KW...

Saints training camp preview: Five players on the roster bubble

NICK UNDERHILL
July 18, 2015

The New Orleans Saints spent the offseason retooling their roster and finding ways to create better competition across the board.

The idea behind the process was to make players feel uncomfortable and create an atmosphere where players are fighting for every opportunity, snap or job.

While this approach isn’t unique to this season, the level of competition at some spots is better than it might have been in previous years. Several key spots will see players battling for jobs at the top of the roster, while a handful of other guys will be fighting at the other end to stay on the team.

We’ll count down some of the other aspects to watch for during training camp over the next week, but today we start with a batch of players who will head to West Virginia on the roster bubble:

WR Josh Morgan...

FB Austin Johnson...

QB Ryan Griffin...

KR Jalen Saunders...

CBs Brian Dixon and Terrence Frederick...

Don't understand Austin Johnson being on this list; thought he's outplayed Lorig, has a friendlier cap number and is a better special teams contributor having also played linebacker...
