McCarthy accepted an offer on a three-year contract from new 49ers coach Mike Nolan late Wednesday night. An announcement is expected to be made today.

Also on Wednesday, the Saints reached an agreement in principle with Green Bay Packers assistant Johnny Roland for running backs coach. Roland, 61, is a 26-year coaching veteran who has coached running backs at Philadelphia, Chicago, the New York Jets, St. Louis, and Arizona. ... Haslett has had a plan in place for weeks to replace McCarthy and has worked discretely behind the scenes this week at the Senior Bowl to execute it.

The top candidate to replace McCarthy is ex-Miami Dolphins quarterbacks coach Marc Trestman.
Saints quarterbacks coach Mike Sheppard also is a potential candidate for the job.
The rest of the Saints staff is expected to return intact.
