this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I read about Swilling's interview with Haslet. Pat asked Jim what position he thought needed the most attention on defense next year. Haslet said SAFETY! [Edited on 2/2/2005 by Danno]...

A safety for SHADOW???
Yeah, thats what he said, but what does it mean? Could this be a smokescreen? Who does he have in mind? Davis, from Georgia? Or a free agent? I read yesterday that someone said move Cie Grant to Saftey, watcha think about that? Would\'nt be bad in my opinion if he is over his injury.

C. Grant is voted off the island. No more chances for him sucking up salary and not playing.
Danno, why is it a safety for me? shadowdrinker said safety was the biggest need, not me. I would love to see Davis here, but if we don\'t address LB or DT in free agency, that\'s my biggest area of need. I am pretty sure we won\'t go with a rookie tackle so it may be safe to say we will at least go free agency there. |

I\'m with Whodi on this.
Cie can take his no playin\' wussy azz and drive M.Lewis\' beer truck until he is ready to stay healthy and stop taking up a position and roster spot during free agency. As for DT, I\'m starting to wonder if that is such a priority. It is still high up on my list of needs, but I\'m thinking maybe I should lower it. The DLine is roughly one big bodied run stuffer away from being pretty darned good. If we get a pair of stud LBs, that should shore up our run-defense, and pass rushing isn\'t exactly a weakness on our D. Perhaps a DB is next on the list. If Mitchell can play, then I don\'t see that we NEED a Safety. After McKenzie our CB corps looks like a bunch of high schoolers... ha ha... ok that was harsh, but they look like a bunch of Nicklebacks. Thus, I suggest that a DB, whether a SS or CB may be a higher priority than a DT. If Mitchell is not ever going to be a starter, then we do need a SS and now (since Bellamy cannot continue to play above his, likely declining, physical skill for much longer). It is still my view that we need to get at least three new defenders and at least one new OT (hopefully two) before any other position gets addressed. What say you guys? |

A safety for SHADOW???
PS - I\'m with SCS on this one. Every year Haz tries to mislead people about what he wants. This is pretty well a permanent feature of our off-season.
It seems to me that we will have to draft a Safety, as there are very few and even few of quality ones in FA. |

Here\'s what I think. This is not a priority list, just what I think we can do to improve our D for the short term. We need to get at least a DT, a LB, and a safety. No way in hell we can address all our needs this year, but this is the start. I want us to take a run at Hovan. He will be inexpensive due to his lack of playing in Minny, and with a chip on his shoulder, he could be nasty for our D. Then, Edge Hartwell or Bell. For safety, go ahead and draft Davis. I think this will be a huge start and secure us right up the middle. We ain\'t going from 32nd to 12th in a year, so baby steps. Secure your middle, and most everything else will take care of itself.

if we could do that-and somehow grab a cb-either a young backup with potential to start or someone like smoot..and then address the line..backup rb/qb we would be set..and if the team is smart-i do think we could do a major upgrade this offseason...we just gotta be smart.
my thought: trade brooks to san fran for rattay and a second trade howard for a low number 1 first we go defense second we go say frye and a tackle third we go defense fourth-seventh we get best available then through free agency we get a good DT(hovan would work), maybe a linebacker-bell if we go safety...and a good cb-their are alot of upgrades here in FA. we\'d have improved our team drastically. |

Those are DRASTIC moves, not that I don\'t agree. The question as always on those kinds of moves is, WILL THIS ORG DO IT? I would love to see each one happen, but I am highly skeptical.

I don\'t think that Hovan is who we need. We need a NT type DT who can fill both A gaps. Hovan is about the same size as Young, and that would put us without having a large body in the interior of the line (relatively speaking of course saying 295 is not a large body). Plus we have to consider that Hovan lost his starting job this year, and wasn\'t much of a factor. With that said, I don\'t know who the large body FA DT\'s are this year. Anybody?

I think Hovan is EXACTLY what we need. La\'roi Glover is 282, he is pretty dominant. IMHO, Hovan with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove is worth it. He is young, and he has proven previously to be a force, unlike Sullivan who has proven nothing except his nose knows where the buffet is. And unlike drafting a guy, who could be another Sully.
