New Orleans Saints release Junior Galette

1 Attachment(s)
The New Orleans Saints released embattled outside linebacker Junior Galette on Friday, a source told NOLA.com's Larry Holder.

Galette's release comes less than one year after he signed a lucrative contract extension meant to ensure his long-term future in New Orleans.

"(It was) the worst call they've ever made," Galette told NOLA.com | The Times Picayune Friday afternoon. "It was a terrible call to kick me when I'm down."

Galette met this summer with NFL officials in New York about his January arrest for domestic violence at his home in Kenner. The charge was later dismissed.

Re: Saints release Galette

Yeah, apparently the NFL started notifying teams of player suspensions. Maybe the Saints got the information they needed to release him.

My guess is that they also can now reduce the cap hit somehow.

Quote:

It’s possible the Saints could try to fight to get some of that money back, especially if Galette is suspended. But it’s not easy for teams to recoup signing bonus money that has already been paid out -- even when there are detrimental-conduct clauses that nullify future guarantees.

Although it’s happened in some cases -- most notably Michael Vick in Atlanta after his dogfighting charges -- it’s rare. The Baltimore Ravens, for instance, didn’t seek to get any signing bonus money back after they released running back Ray Rice last year in the wake of his domestic violence charges. They actually settled a dispute with Rice over whether he should receive any of his 2014 salary.

If Galette is punished for the 2013 incident, the Saints could possibly argue that he withheld information about the incident when he signed his deal (an approach the New England Patriots reportedly may take if Aaron Hernandez is convicted on murder charges that predated his most recent contract).

Good riddance. Regardless of how much of a cap hit we have to eat, this was the right move. All the effort that was put into changing the culture in the locker room would have gone for nought if this ******** had been allowed to stay.

WOW... I thought the financial ramifications would be too much for this to happen but it definitely had to be done. I agree that there's probably a suspension about to be announced and that hastened the process.

Re: Saints release Galette

If he suspended why release him, now what does that do to the cap? Will he still be entitled to that signing bonus?

I was against releasing him til I heard about his conduct or his associates conduct toward Sean Payton. We don't need a poison pill that will influence more bad conduct toward our coach. I know he will be a great player for some team but he is gonna be a bad person some other franchise most likely the Falcons will pick him up

Re: Saints release Galette

I don't get how this helps anything in the future. Besides just keeping a creep out of the locker room. Maybe that's enough though.

"By releasing him after June 1, however, the Saints would only have to take a $5.45 million cap charge in 2015 and could push $12.1 million (for the remaining bonuses) to 2016.

If Galette's release is related to off-field behavior, they could try to reclaim some of the money spent on bonuses, or perhaps a portion of his fully guaranteed 2015 salary, but that would likely be met with objections from Galette and the players union."

We'll probably take a hit on the money side but at least it sends a message!

Defensive captain one season, released before the next one!

No, it being a post June 1st release it lowers our cap hit this season.

Re: Saints release Galette

I don't think it has anything to do with the money or the cap or what happens in the future....I think they just decided they want the dude gone, period, plain and simple. I suspect they also got an earful about this guy, from the actual season ticket holders. I know a lot of LONGTIME seat holders who were very angry/frustrated about him and the off-field issues.

Re: Saints release Galette

If he is suspended it's likely it will be for three games since the act happen prior to the rule change

I wonder if the saints can withhold the 12 million owed to him next season since Galete agent said it wasn't him on the video with the belt making a case that the saints didn't know of this conduct before the signning of his contract. Either way this about to get messyyyyyyyyy

I guarantee the NFL was in Loomis's ear on this one and that we have some cap relief coming. The NFLPA will be battling this to the death, but as long as we get the initial ruling, we're good

Something new entered the equation because we're a long way past June 1st.

Injury and/or impending suspension.

I tend to agree. It speaks volumes that the Saints would much rather take this potentially huge financial hit rather than continue to put up with Junior's shenanigans.

Regardless of his talent and ability, this guy must have truly been a menace to society.

Shame... Jr was Once a gritty, hard working fan favorite.

I'm glad we made the right call for the organization.

Good luck in Dallas Jr

Not happy about losing our best pass rusher from a production standpoint but I am glad that cancer is gone.

Re: New Orleans Saints release Junior Galette

Although I hate to see the cap hit and the loss of a talented player, it sends a very serious message to the players. The staff obviously is not going to put up with any BS...from anyone.

It was the right thing to do. He'll go somewhere else and we'll read about another domestic situation or legal issue he has later this year.

He lost himself.

I think they have faith in the front 7, not necessarily one player.

Spencer looked fantastic and fully healed down the stretch last year
Edibali has another year under his belt
Kikihaha will contribute
Tull will contribute
Anthony, Powell and Ellerbe all have pass rush potential

Junior was a cancer. You seldom hear a player criticize another player, but several current and former Saints have publicly and privately told us this guys was a total loser.

We'll be a better team for it.

To me and I've always said this, IMO JR was highly overrated 10 sacks and bad against the run isn't good production. If you're gonna be a one trick pony you better have more than 10 sacks a year.
