He's the 4th best lineman on the team. That makes him a starting guard. If he doesn't step up this season, he was just not a good pick at #13. More to the point, not a good scheme fit. He was a tackle in college on a running team. He's being placed at guard in the NFL on a passing team. That's not an easy transition. But, I personally think he will shine this year.

Strief will be a starter as long as possible because of his intangibles. He's a great leader. Sean Payton would rather have a lineman who doesn't make mental errors rather than a physical beast who gets the protections wrong.

Strief is a liability and if he starts he's gonna get Brees killed.

From RG it's an easier transition to RT than it would be from LT.

Spot on! Just making the transition from being in a left stance to a right will take some time.

strief is on his last leg, but my guess is that Peat at guard with strief at tackle gives us the best 5 guys out there we can have. In the meantime we have to find another guard and move Peat to RT and that will probably happen after this season.

well i can only hope that strief may have been injured last season and returns to form, but he certainly looked to be on his last leg

Re: I admit I was wrong

I say it over and over. Drafting a a tackle that can swing left to right and back again is vastly under rated. It is not as easy as it seems.

He was not ready to be starter in the NFL when he was drafted
He has almost played his entire football life as a LT. So dance to the right was a mess
It is safe to safe he probably is still a better backup LT still than as a backup RT.
So this is a step in the right direction.
If RT is were he is going to be then RG makes all the sense in the world.

Conclusion he was a bit of a reach in a draft were reaching for OT was all the fad. (mid 20s was his range). He probably would have not gotten past Carolina at 25. If he does a solid job at RG and shows improvement with moving to the right all season long he is not a wasted pick really.

I for one say he is almost on schedule to push for the starting job at RT in year 3.

Re: I admit I was wrong

I think it's honestly best to move on from long time players so that things are positive before things become nasty. Like it was with Colston. I felt bad wanting him gone and didn't want him to go out the way he did but the team didn't see the warning signs.

Streif is in his 30s, he's at the point of decline.

How many years in a row has Brees been a top 5 QB in yards with Strief as RT?
