Saints plan to start Mayberry at RT ... BUT
Mayberry, 31, played primarily right guard in Philadelphia. He was selected to the Pro Bowl at the position in 2002. But the Saints want him to start at right tackle, where he'll replace unrestricted free agent Victor Riley, the starter the past two seasons. Mayberry has starting experience at both guard and tackle spots. He has not started at right tackle since 1999.
"Jermane has starting experience at every spot up front other than center," Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said. "He is the consummate professional in his approach. He has been voted to the Pro Bowl and has a wealth of postseason experience. His signing will have a positive impact on our entire offense, from both a production and leadership perspective." It's unclear how Mayberry's signing affects the Saints' courtship of Fred Miller, who was released by the Tennessee Titans last month. Miller, a right tackle, visited the Saints earlier this weekend and is set to visit Chicago today. He is expected to choose between the Bears and Saints early next week. link |

Saints plan to start Mayberry at RT ... BUT
Mayberry can\'t be much more of a liability at RT than \"Premature Riley\"; however, given the reports that I\'ve read, Mayberry is a pro-bowler at RG and a serviceable RT.
I really hope they don\'t give up on trying to get Miller (or someone else... cough Womack cough) in FA. THAT would be a serious upgrade to our line. Consider: Gandy - Serviceable (against speed rush) to Good (mechanics, intelligence, experience). Holland/Jacox - Serviceable (both have good strength and Holland has decent mobility). Bently - Will be a pro-bowler at C. Mayberry - Is a pro-bowler at RG. Miller - A real grinder in the running game. Sounds like a recipe for a crippling ground game! Tight. My main fear is that even with Miller we will not have seriouisly improved our pass blocking, and we will continue to see AB running for his life (that is bad because he is running for his life, not because he is AB... guys). However, with a serious improvement in our running game, other teams may not be able to turn their dogs loose as often - which may improve our pass protection. [Edited on 6/3/2005 by JKool] |
