C.J. Spiller Released - Mistake or Necessity?

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I'd support the decision if we do the same thing on the other side of the ball and release Byrd... Then is truly shows the front office is consistent......

I would suspect that has much more to do with depth at the position. The Saints still have 4 more tailbacks after Spiller was released but if they released Byrd now, they'd only have 1 free safety on the roster. Also, Byrd's dead money hit this year would be $17 million but drops to $8mil next year.

I agree with your first position, although dead money in the current period has no factor in the decision since that money is already spent.

Murphy can fill that roll easily. Hope to start seeing more of him and less of Cadet.

I don't understand all the cadet hate. He's no Sproles but he performed admirably last year when Ingram went down. Good special teams player. A lot of bang for the buck.

I wonder who's on the trade block around the league.

Meh, he could do more, I find myself underwhelmed by him every year.

Remember week 17 last year vs Falcons, he fumbled on the 2 yard line right into the endzone, that would have put the game away, luckily our defense got an interception anyway.

Last week, dropping 2 straight passes on an important drive.

I just don't know, yeah he knows the offense but if he's really that smart I'd expect to see something in his play and he rarely shows anything.

CJ was running like a wuss. Showed some speed and talent is still there; he's just running like a 'fraidy cat.

Hadn't seen anything but as you already know, that could change at any given moment.

THAT being said, unless we NEED the roster space, or he was a locker room cancer - I would have tried him in the regular season... maybe it would have sparked his competitive desire.
