C.J. Spiller Released - Mistake or Necessity?

Yesterday the Saints released running back C.J. Spiller. Spiller was also inactive for the Saints vs. Raiders game as a last minute move. Coach Sean Payton had a lot of positives to say about Spiller during camp. Was this another front office error playing into more zombie money for the Saints? Or was this necessary because Spiller hasn't been able to complete a season healthy?

Mistake in my opinion.

In preseason CJ finally looked healthy, 2 mistakes have been made here;

Giving him a 16 Mil contract when he's injured
Cutting him the minute he finally looks healthy

I mean come on, Cadet is awful. I don't understand how he continually gets a roster spot.

FWIW, Mike Florio radio show (PFT) claims CJ still didn't know the playbook. Multiple times Brees would have to turn over at CJ to make sure he understood the assignment.

Cadet may be limited in terms of ability, however he understands the offense, Brees and Sean's playbook.

Take it for what it's worth.

If that really is the case which does sound plausible, then SP should have known this before giving him the exact same contract as Ingram.

Maybe Spiller just didn't get into the mix in New Orleans. He still may be very athletic but it just never sunk in. Our offense is very different than Buffalo. Sometimes you go to a new place and it doesn't sink in. Coach Peyton doesn't want to hurt his career hoping he catches on elsewhere.

That said, our contracts should account for something like this happening. We need more shrewd business dealings.

If Spiller didn't know the playbook then it was the absolute correct decision to release him. I honestly like Mark Ingram as a receiver and think he has the ability to be what Pierre Thomas was.
