The 2017 Byrd quandary

What would you do with him next year? Pay cut? So far he has registered 67 total tackles and one pass defended.

Thoughts?

Lately he hasn't been as bad as he was at first, however the money we are paying him you can't just settle for "not bad." For that kind of money he needs to be a difference maker, I never see him undercut routes for picks or force fumbles, simply not worth it. I think release.

Haircut on the money for sure, if he doesn't I want to go after the S from Michigan.

I am not very knowledgeable with salary cap issues, but I would guess if the cap hit isn't too bad he will wind up being released. Yes, he has been better this year, but he has not made the impact that warrants what the Saints are paying for.

If Jairus is released, Saints FO would incur roughly 8M in dead money as opposed to 3.5M or so in cap savings.

Re: The 2017 Byrd quandary

2017 is the first year Byrd would actual be a positive cut

cap hit - dead money = savings

$11,700,000 - $8,000,000 = $3.7 mill

I would approach the off season trying not to back myself in a corner at FS but if I need some extra money to sign a quality FA and put a second year man back there starting, here is an option. I am still not sold on Bell at FS

Now the target year iMO would be 2018

$12,200,000 - $4,600,000 = $8 mill

Now the writing is on the wall IMO. because in 2019

$10,200,000 - $1,200,000 = $9 mill

There is a good chance he survives IMO in 2017. FA market will determine the to cut or not to cut move.

Watch the draft closely. Couple of pretty good safeties should be available to us in the draft. This a S, CB/S, CB rich draft. I would not be surprised to see us get at least 2 new faces in the secondary. a little wheeling and dealing possibly 3. Which would not bother me at all

But if money is needed Byrd is on the Cap causality options list without a doubt.

It is hard coming back from multiple knee recos and he is only just starting to come good. Agree he needs to take a haircut in salary but I feel his experience has helped guys like Vaccaro and Bell (who I think is going to be a very good player for us).

Well we just spent two draft picks (3rd and 4th round pick) to acquire the back of the 2nd round pick on Vonn Bell...

So going out and spending Byrd cash and limiting Bell's playing time makes absolutely no sense, especially with his promise...

If you're gonna slot that kinda money for a safety, cut Byrd and go get somebody like Eric Berry, but I still wouldn't do it...

Raphael Bush is still out there but he may prefer to start in Detroit or destinations unknown than take even a little more to return...

Daniel Huff or Marques Huff are RFAs; maybe a Kelcie McCray or Bacarri Rambo, but you're asking veterans to backup a second year guy...

I see three (3) options...

First, stand pat, continue to take it in the salary cap with the Byrd contract and keep the slot there until next year for the SS Vaccaro...

Second, seek out a backup free safety with a mid round pick or convince a Rambo or McCray we're that close to a championship...

Third, we've got alot of cornerbacks, maybe convert Damian Swann to FS as many projected him prior to the draft...

And don't forget that we'll have Erik Harris and Jimmy Pruitt returning from Injured Reserve; Pruitt was also playing FS and was like a Payton redshirt...

And who knows if Pruitt plays well enough, we can wait and cut Byrd or even better, trade him, at the end of camp...

Vonn Bell is already making the calls to adjust coverage in the secondary so what exactly is Byrd good for at this point?!

Experience, depth...

My concern is that he'd be a negative influence in the locker room...

Kenny Vaccaro's quote at the beginning of the season about wanting to be great really is coming back to me now...
