Re: Saints can get something before sending 4th pick to NE.
Why idiotic? If that was the only way they were going to make the deal then it had to happen. The Saints got as much as they could for Cooks in an attempt to improve the defense. Could it have been better? Yes, but only if the Patriots were willing to make it better, which they obviously weren't. Besides, what difference does it make to the Saints what happens to the pick they moved as part of the deal? It certainly makes no difference whatsoever in my mind.

It doesn't speak well of our front office when they get fleeced on deals while other teams are making out on their deals. The Titans, whether or not they ever win again, have gotten huge value in trade deals the last couple of years. It seems to me that if you stand your ground long enough, teams will crack, if they really want a player or draft pick bad enough. The Saints have a propensity to cave in on contract demands and trades. Not every time (I liked what they did on the first day of free agency a lot, aside from Ginn, who I am indifferent about), but far too often. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: These guys keep getting free passes because of that Superbowl. That was an awesome accomplishment. But I think there would be a lot more wide spread criticism for how things have played out since then, if not for that championship. At least they did make a couple of nice moves the other day, including finally getting some guard help. |
If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

Secondly, they didn't get fleeced. They got what the market would bear. Cooks is going to be demanding a huge contract soon and his importance to the Saints offense wasn't worth it. No team other than the Patriots were willing to deal with that factor. The Saints got an additional first rounder with a fifth year option and moved up at least 15 spots from the 4th to the 3rd. |
