Haslett doesn't have final say on personnel

From today's T-P:

quote:On the organization's personnel philosophy: "I don't think we had a really good understanding of what we were looking for, player-wise, or what we're trying to build until the last year or so. That's why Victor (Riley) is not coming back with us. We're getting better players in the locker room and better football players -- team guys. People always say, 'Well, why did Jim Haslett bring this guy in?' or 'Why did Jim Haslett draft this guy?' That's not always true. The head coach doesn't always have the final say on who you bring in or who you draft. I get involved in personnel as much as any of them (head coaches), but after the third round, I don't even know who these guys are. I didn't draft Colby Bockwoldt. I didn't know who he was. I didn't watch film on him. I didn't know anything about him. We were going on (pro scout) Bill Quinter's recommendation. The kid turns out to be a hell of a football player. Like Victor Riley. I didn't know who Victor Riley was when we brought him in."

That\'s what general managers are for... isn\'t that obvious?

That\'s very discouraging.....but at least it makes Haslett seem not so incompetent.

Yeah but you\'d think your head coach would have some imput on the matter, rather than being handed a player that he didn\'t even know existed. That\'s kind of frightening.

I would dig it up again, but why bother. I have posted an article twice now that says Loomis has final say in personnel. This statement Haslett is making in no way means EVERY personnel decision did not have his okay, he just called out Victor. What about Tesucky? He seemed awfully excited to get him. Notice how he also said he doesn\'t pay attention after the third round. Number one, that makes him an idiot. Number two, that also leads you to beleive he was aware fully of the Sully, Stinchcomb and Henderson picks and okayed them.

Seems Haslett is impressed by Bockwoldt. I\'ve been saying all along that Colby impressed me more than Courtney Watson. I know it\'s two different positions but I think Haslett is sold on Colby buy not Watson.

I say that because of us trying to get Dat from the Cowboys. Just reading between the lines?

I rthink that they are looking at moving Watson to strongside linebacker..mainly due to the e urge to get Dat..

so who are the best MLB\'s in the draft...

I think we will go OT, DT, MLB, maybe backup rb, qb in the draft..but in what order?

Shouldn\'t a GM know who every player in the draft is? I almost know everyone from just surfing the net!!!What a loser GM we have

I don\'t know that I\'m buying what Jim is selling. Even so, this would suggest that he knew about guys like Henderson, but not Buckwoldt. Hey knew about Tebucky, but not about Horn. I don\'t know that this changes my view that much... especially since I don\'t believe that Haslett has been particularly open or honest in the past - at least not with the media.
