Despite defensive needs, Saints pick offensive tackle at No. 32

1 Attachment(s)
I'm going to assume not too many New Orleans Saints fans were enamored with the team's selection of Wisconsin tackle Ryan Ramczyk at No. 32 overall in the NFL Draft.

I get it. It wasn't "sexy." It wasn't a defensive player. It also wasn't an immediate need taken with the pick the team acquired from New England in the Brandin Cooks trade.

Yet, there's no doubt the Saints chose the best available player on their draft board. So you can't really fault them in that sense.

Ramczyk tied for NFL.com's highest grade of all the offensive linemen in this year's draft. The 6-foot-6, 310-pound tackle also was rated CBS Sports' 16th best overall prospect.

The run of defensive players at the back end of the first round likely spurred this move by the Saints.

Ramczyk low risk high reward pick. starting ROT skill set from day 1 and for years to come. Besides 5th year option on a OT is a smart move.

Not only an heir apparent to Strief, but he may be able to win the job outright.

Re: Despite defensive needs, Saints pick offensive tackle at No. 32

No not sexy, but the right pick considering the perceived depth of defense this year.

DE
LB
S
WR
CB

Let's have a strong finish

Hey better win out right. We need to win now, not for the future. I like the pick a lot, just don't see how he is going to get sacks.
Defense defense defense.

Re: Despite defensive needs, Saints pick offensive tackle at No. 32

Maybe he'd be there 10 picks later at 42, maybe not. Maybe he is an upgrade over Strief...

All I know if we could have jumped the Niners at 31 and gotten Foster, a second starter on defense for probably a 7th this year or next. Pissed.

The kind of pick that, if we're not going defense, is what I like. As other's have said you build from the lines, and this guy is going to be great on the o-line. I'm smiling.

Man, a lot of people don't get that the draft is about the future. If you draft straight up for need you're probably a terrible franchise.

We landed TWO players ranked #1 at their respective positions... 2.

What is not to like about that?

Talk to me when the fifth year option comes around. Then we can do those redrafts. 4yrs to prove me right or wrong is fair

Re: Despite defensive needs, Saints pick offensive tackle at No. 32

As i said rather have had a DE but it really does as some great depth on the line

LT Armstead-Peat
LG Peat-Kelemete
C- Unger - Allen
RG Warford-Kelemete - Turner
RT Strief - Ramczyk

That is some quality depth on paper

neugey 04-28-2017 08:42 AM

Re: Despite defensive needs, Saints pick offensive tackle at No. 32

I really liked the pick. Now we are 3-deep at OT so we can finally hopefully keep Peat at LG and let him settle in. We are no longer 1 injury away from Peat moving all over the line.

And here's the thing - we need a pass rusher, but we don't need a Bruce Smith-type (although that would be nice). We need a speedy type like Danielle Hunter from the Vikings or the KGB that used to play for the Packers. Someone that we can rotate in on obvious passing downs that can wreck the protection. We can hopefully find that guy later in the draft and coach him up, or possibly use Kikaha in that role.

We all get you pick to build and for the future. However if you a coach and your 7-9 three years in a row. Having a qb is in only a two - three span, at best. You pick where you need by far the most help. Which is defense
Offense top 5 for how many years in a row.
Defense , bottom half for how many years in a row.
Let me say I do like the pick, please get starters for now. I hope he beats out Street, then I'm happy

I like how some are chicken littling like the draft is over; even though it was only the first round...

Acting like 1st round talent is the only ones good enough to play...

What if Armstead moves to RT and Ramathorn is our new LT?

Isn't Ramczyk a natural RT, with one year at LT? From what I understand he is very versatile... I still think he comes in and takes Striefs job from day 1

Re: Despite defensive needs, Saints pick offensive tackle at No. 32

Ramczyk is a bit hard to peg because he is raw.

athletic enough to be a LT

athletic enough to be a very good RT is a safer bet

Lattimore was projected # 5-7 in most drafts. Ramczyk was projected 15-25.
Both are needs and BPA who fell way lower than most expected. There was a run on Def. Solid draft selections to me.

He was the #1 OT in the draft, and the 16th best overall prospect in the draft. We nabbed him at 32.

I'm just fine with that.

Warford, Ramczyk, AP. Kept Kuhn. We're going to be running plenty this year. Armstead-Peat-Unger-Warford-Streif is as much BEEF as we've had since Nicks left.

To me, it seemed like a buy a great one (on sale) and get another great one for free deal last night. Of course, I've thought all along that Cooks was far from irreplaceable and our 32 was a gift that we used quite well. Plus, how many of us have been screaming, SCREAMING for better OL representation in our drafts for years now? Stay tuned folks, there's plenty of really good stuff to come these next couple of days.

I get both picks. I would have rather had Reddick and Willis. Two players you could have plugged and played on defense and got a CB later. But, they are two top players

He said he will be ready after that hip surgery but they all say that so I don't know. Probably not working out like he wants yet so likely ready but not full go as far as shape. I don't see him starting right out the gate. He did well against LSU though which says a lot. Dude is a beast run blocker when healthy.

Saw some quick videos of him ... nasty, mean & coaches rave about his football IQ. Maybe now some of those 3rd and short drives stay alive and we keep our defense off the field & rested.

Exactly. This was an absolute steal. We got the best Tackle in the draft with the last pick of the first round...

Who you got at #42 JP?

Bowser? Willis? Tim Williams?

and since we are 'building for the future', why does that only apply to offense?
and with a first round pick you expect a starter. We already have a starter who rates out in the top quarter at this position.
yeah, he's getting up there in years, but I hear there will be a draft next year also, and FA too

Man, thanks to Da Bears, KC Minute Steaks, Planet Houston, Detroit Lion-o's, and other dumbasses we've got some terrific talent no one saw falling...

And I'd consider trading some players now to upgrade and pick up some more picks if talent keeps falling in this draft...

Armstead|Peat|Unger|Warford|Ramcyzk/Strief

On paper looks to be a solid line :bng:

I was wondering about that last night. Is Sean considering keeping it on the ground more? All he would need to do is figure out the other side of the ball. A strong ground game needs a strong D.

A strong run game with nuclear strike capabilities would be awesome!

Championship!

Best OT in a weak draft for O-linemen. That's inspiring.

Re: Despite defensive needs, Saints pick offensive tackle at No. 32

Again I like the pick, but if from what I hear from the expert analyst that have repeatedly said he will be a back up. I'm hoping get he starts straight up.
All I am saying is I would rather have Defense. 11 DE, 32 lb, or corner.
And if he can get a sack somehow or cause turnovers. I'll do back flips with my Ole ass

I love the OT pick, for years I've wanted a midwest country strong lineman. Looks like we got one, hopefully Payton is cured of his pass happyitis and they start to pound the ball all day on the ground with passes mixed in

And what would have cost to jump the Niners for Foster? It would have taken two picks, at least, including a third this season. Not worth it. There's too much talent left out there and Ramczyk was a bargain, and a need, at that spot.

Round 1, Pick 32 (No. 32) (From New England)

Ryan Ramczyk, OT, Wisconsin:
An interesting conclusion to a wild night. This is the pick that the Saints acquired for trading Brandin Cooks to New England, but there weren’t many (any?) folks predicting they’d use it on a tackle. That’s not to say it is a nonsensical selection. Andrus Peat, the Saints’ 2015 first-rounder, has settled in at guard, and veteran Zach Strief turns 34 in September. So, the Saints got a jump on any potential future headaches by bringing in Ramczyk. The knock: It probably does not make New Orleans any better in 2017 unless Strief is headed out the door early. The defense could have used another body here. GRADE: B

FWIW, there is a "unconfirmed report" coming out now that Reuben Foster will require a second surgery on his shoulder. Possibly another reason why he slid so far down the draft board last night.
